Preparing 6th Graders for Middle School

Our middle school feeder schools (Rocky Run MS and Johnson MS) have been doing an outstanding job of preparing our 6th graders for their transition to middle school next year.  We have already had presentations here at GBW from our feeder schools, and we have also been scheduling in-person visits to each of the feeder schools.

Below are some pictures of our in-person student orientation for our 6th graders feeding into Rocky Run MS earlier this week.  It was action packed trip with a welcoming message from the admin / counselor team, musical performances, free t-shirt contests, and words of wisdom from Rocky Run student representatives.  Rocky Run students shared several helpful tips for how to quickly transition between classes, how to best organize binders, and tips for managing and completing homework.  We even had a personalized tour led by a GBW alumni student at Rocky Run.

Rocky Run and Katherine Johnson- thank you so much for your welcoming efforts to help our 6th graders to successfully transition into middle school!

2024-2025 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2024, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2024, please complete this form and return it no later than January 25, 2024. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2024-2025 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at pli@fcps.edu. We thank you in advance for returning the form no later than January 25, 2024.

Let Me Run (4th-6th)

& Girls on the Run (3rd-6th)

Return to GBW!!

These clubs can happen at GBW thanks to volunteers like YOU! Both programs are help students grow both physically and socially. Students will run and complete lessons on things like why our words matter, the importance of friendships, and how to believe in ourselves. Both are national non-profits that provide coach training, curriculum, and materials needed for lessons! Girls on the Run is a 10 week, 2x a week commitment, starting the week of March 4th and ending mid-May. Let Me Run is a 7 week, 2x a week commitment, also in the spring, but exact dates to be determined.

From the coaches that we already have committed, Girls on the Run will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Historically, Let Me Run’s GBW club has been in the morning, starting at 7:45 until school starts, but our committed coach is flexible so if you are interested in coaching, let us know what works for you!

Find out more about these clubs by heading to gotrnova.org and letmerun.org, and email Site Coordinator Mary Drum (mbdrum@fcps.edu) to indicate the club in which you are interested. .
