The Principals' POSITIVE Press

Hello CES Community,

We had a POSITIVE first week of 2024! Everyone has had a POSITIVE transition back to school. We are very excited that our new POSITIVE sign is up and working. Please bear with us as we continue our POSITIVE learning on the variety of functions the sign offers.

As we start the POSITIVE new year, we would like to remind the CES Community of the importance of POSITIVE school attendance. At CES we have a team that meets to monitor student attendance. We understand that this is the time of year when POSITIVE winter weather and children’s illnesses can take a toll on school attendance. But it’s important to get your POSITIVE children to school every day possible. If you are unsure whether to send your children to POSITIVE school, consult your doctor or the FCPS website for guidance. Our POSITIVE school nurse, Rachel Thompson, is also a terrific resource for chronic health conditions. Regular POSITIVE school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your POSITIVE child will read on grade level. Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable. Our goal is to work with you to ensure your POSITIVE student is learning, growing, and successful at CES!

Costa Rican Visitors

CES is excited to welcome our friends from Sonny Bilingual School in Cartago, Costa Rica from January 16th - January 23rd. Five teachers from the school will be visiting and collaborating with us. We are excited to learn more about Costa Rican culture as well as share more about CES culture with them. CES and Sonny have a long history of collaboration over the past 10 years. Staff members from CES have traveled to Cartago twice and this will be the third visit for staff members from Sonny. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and staff to expand upon the Portrait of a Graduate skill of Global and Ethical Citizens. We look forward to sharing more about the upcoming experience!

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.
