Young Author's Night - Thursday, February 8

SLES Young Author's Night

We are having our Young Author's Night on Thursday, February 8 @ 6-7pm.  Last year, it was our most attended family event, and we are thrilled to be able to have another night where we can showcase our students’ writing.  Please join us for an evening of celebrating students’ hard work and sharing their writing.  You are welcome to visit  your students’ classrooms any time between 6-7pm.  We will also have a book give-away, 6th grade sponsored bake sale, raffle tickets for chance to win SLES swag, a special SLES 60th Anniversary celebration and more.

Lexia Data Parent Reports

In the upcoming Wednesday folders, you will receive a parent copy of your child’s Lexia Skills Report. The purpose of this report is to share information about the progress your student is making in Lexia. Lexia Reading (CORE5 and PowerUp) is our computer program designed to supplement literacy instruction and it is just one component of the literacy block. This report will contain your student’s progress since they started using Lexia. It is a snapshot of the different levels they have completed. For clarification, you will see - Rate and Accuracy. Rate tells the speed that students go through each task.  Accuracy tells how correct (high, medium, low) they were on a task. Please remember that last year was the first year of implementation of the Lexia Reading computer program and so you may note some discrepancies. Therefore, the data from the 2023-2024 school year is most beneficial for informing instructional next steps and that is our focus. Please contact us with any questions you might have.

🔢 Virtual Math Week Starts on Monday

Help FCPS Reach 1 Million Minutes of Math. FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families.

Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8. Visit the Math Week website.

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

Screenshot from Opioid Video

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.
