A Note from the Principal

Dear Rocky Run Community-

I hope that each of you enjoyed a restful and relaxing winter break. It was exciting to welcome the students and teachers back to school on January 2. Their energy and enthusiasm is a constant reminder of how cool it is to work in a middle school.

Even though 2024 just started, we are already starting to plan for the 2024-2025 school year. All three primary feeder high schools (Chantilly, Centreville and Westfield) will be visiting on Monday, January 8 to discuss high school transitions. We look forward to welcoming all of our rising 7th grade students to tour RRMS on January 9. My fingers are crossed that the weather cooperates with our schedule, even though I love a good snow day!

We will also hold a virtual curriculum night presentation, via Zoom on Tuesday, January 16, starting at 6:00. Lastly, we will hold an in-person elective fair on Thursday, January 18. These events are specifically targeted to rising 7th grade students and families, but current 7th grade families are always welcome!

Throughout the month of January, our amazing student services team will be meeting individually with our current 7th and 8th graders (through their science class) to conduct academic advising. During the month, please talk with your students and help them with these important decisions.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look forward to seeing you at RRMS soon.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.
