Family Math Week

Gators - Join Us for Family Math Week!

January 8-12

FCPS is inviting students in grades K-8 for 5 nights during the week of January 8, 2024, to engage with math!  Any and ALL math experiences count. The goal is for the FCPS community to experience 1,000,000 minutes of math outside of the school day.  Let’s see how many minutes our Gators can log and contribute to the FCPS goal!

Families can log onto the FCPS Family Math website (also accessible through the Kings Glen homepage under Resources) to engage in math activities at home that include stories with mathematical concepts connected to a variety of different math games from around the world. Through rich story-based mathematics experiences, math week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a positive way. To access the games, families will be able to simply click on the day of the week and find their child's grade and language. The website offers explanations and videos once you scroll down. All activities are available in English and Spanish.

Use the games and stories on the website or dust off your favorite board game and play it together. Math is all around us; how many ways can you engage in math as a family?

Food Insecurity Resources for Families

Food insecurity impacts more than 60,000 Fairfax County residents. There are many resources available to support those who need food assistance. Find out how to receive or offer support on the Fairfax County website, or view their Human Services Resource Guide for assistance with food, clothing, housing, and other services.

No Dogs Allowed

Per FCPS Reg 2125, with the exception of service animals, dogs are not allowed on school property at any time. This restriction is enforced at all times and is not limited to school hours and school days.

Safe Students, Safe Schools

Fairfax County Public Schools believes that academic success is built on the foundation of a safe learning environment. This includes physical safety, and mental health and wellness. FCPS has a comprehensive approach to safety that involves physical security measures, online monitoring by security staff, and crisis intervention support. The division has created the Safe Students, Safe Schools Brochure (PDF) to enhance your awareness of potential hazards and to equip you with practical tips for how you can help. Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

Cold Weather Coming

Cold Weather Is Here!

As temperatures drop, please be sure to send your children with coats and outerwear to keep them warm for outdoor activities.  Please be sure to label your student's items and encourage your child to check the Lost & Found in cafeteria for any missing items.
