Haycock Hello 1.8.24

play

Dear Haycock Families,

Our first week of 2024 was a good one!  We are glad to be back with our students.

Interims

In an effort to maximize our communication with you about how your students are doing, teachers will be sending mid-quarter interims only to students who at this point will be dropping to a 1 or 2 in a standard(s) on their quarter 2 progress report. This also provides the opportunity for students to work to change that grade by the time quarter 2 progress reports are finalized at the beginning of February.  We did not send interims home first quarter because teachers offered the opportunity to conference with every family and shared student progress then.

We will continue with the practice of sending interims for quarters 3 and 4 this year only for students who have dropped their grade from the previous quarter to a 1 or 2.  If you would like to hear more about interims or have questions, please join us for one of our upcoming Parent Coffees (dates below).

Attendance

Ensuring that your student is at school every day and on time is crucial to their progress and achievement.  We understand that there are many reasons that students must be absent, including family emergencies and illness. Family trips are considered unexcused absences by FCPS.

We will be sending a letter to all the families of students with five or more unexcused absences to support the consistent attendance of all our students.  We appreciate your understanding and cooperation around this important topic.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP  HABoyd@fcps.edu

Jody Delaney, AP  jmdelaney@fcps.edu

Kent Gardens Boundary Update

As previously communicated, FCPS made its recommendation for a boundary adjustment to address the overcrowding issue at Kent Gardens and  recommended "Scenario B".  Scenario B reassigns an estimated 380 students among five elementary schools. A map of affected homes can be found here (scroll to Scenario B).

  • Rising Kindergarten and 1st-grade students will be reassigned to attend the newly assigned school for the 2024-25 school year.
  • Rising 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students have the option to attend the newly assigned school or remain at their prior assigned school for the 2024-25 school year and until they matriculate to middle school.

Open Houses for each elementary school will be held on January 25th at 3PM (for prospective new students to each school due to the boundary changes)

Chesterbrook ES-  1753 Kirby Rd, McLean, VA 22101

Churchill Road ES-  7100 Churchill Rd, McLean, VA 22101

Haycock ES-   6616 Haycock Rd, Falls Church, VA 22043

Franklin Sherman ES- 6633 Brawner St, McLean, VA 22101

The adopted phasing plan allows students/caregivers the option to remain at their current school or change schools now, addressing the different perspectives voiced in public feedback. It also considers the needs of older elementary school students who were in school during COVID, and another change may be stressful. The phasing plan allows continuity for students enrolled in the French Immersion program at Kent Gardens, which starts at first grade.

Students that are involved in phasing over the next several years will be provided bus transportation to their elementary school.  Please understand that with a current shortage of bus drivers in our area and the requirement of additional bus runs to accommodate phasing, your patience will be required as all of these new runs are established.  We need those that are involved in the affected neighborhoods to fill out the form indicating which school your child will attend by the February deadline so our transportation staff has maximum planning time.

The McLean Elementary Boundary Webpage will continue to be updated with important news going forward.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

Snow Days this Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather. During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

Kids Heart Challenge Coming in February

Haycock will be participating in the Kids Heart Challenge again in February.  This is both a fundraiser for the American Heart Association and a beneficial physical fitness activity for our students.

Please consider donating to the Kids Heart Challenge this year by clicking on the link.  Find our school, Haycock Elementary School, within the drop-down menu.  Join our team.  Create your login if you have not joined before.

Our Kids Heart Challenge Event takes place during your child’s physical education class during the week of February 20th to February 23rd.  Your child does not have to fundraise in order to participate in the event.
