Happy Holidays

Greetings,

As your Braddock District School Board Member for the past 12 years, I want to share a heartfelt final farewell as my term officially comes to a close on December 31st.

It has been my honor and joy to serve our highly-engaged and caring community. Please know that I am deeply humbled by your support throughout my tenure. I am also immensely grateful to my staff aide of three years, Donna Nelson-Schneider. She worked tirelessly to help our district, and is now using her many talents to assist Superintendent Reid.

From the very beginning of my public service, my singular goal has remained the same: to help FCPS fulfill its mission to be a premiere school system where all students can reach their full potential.

I have consistently championed the need for data-driven decisions, stronger accountability, greater transparency, and robust community engagement. I firmly believe these actions are paramount for building and sustaining public trust in our school system, as well as successfully serving our students, families, and employees.

With an strong conviction to promote continuous improvement, I often had to ask tough questions. While it wasn’t easy at times, I am proud of the collective decisions that occurred during my tenure.

Some of these highlights include:

  • ensuring the strategic deployment of FCPS’ annual $3B+ budget
  • implementing more competitive compensation to attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff
  • hiring and/or supervising the work of five Superintendents
  • establishing an independent Office of the Auditor General
  • implementing Later High School Start Times
  • instituting Full-Day Mondays for Elementary School Students
  • implementing Middle School Recess
  • reforming the student discipline system (SR&R), including the addition of Restorative Justice practices
  • improving Early Literacy and Dyslexia instruction
  • improving instruction and delivery of the Advanced Academic Program (AAP) and Young Scholars Program
  • restoring upper-level high school honors courses in English/Social Studies
  • developing FCPS’ Portrait of a Graduate
  • constructing FCPS’ first Strategic Plan
  • providing healthier school meals for students, and implementing a summer meals program
  • instituting curriculum enhancements for ESOL students
  • adding over 35 pre-K classrooms
  • implementing stronger environmentally friendly operational practices
  • protecting LGBTQIA+ students and staff through our non-discrimination policy

As with any complex, large-scale organization, there is always room for improvement. However, there is much to be hopeful about FCPS. Our schools continue to offer rigorous instruction from highly-dedicated and talented teachers and staff. Our schools also strive every day to create a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment.

While my retirement is bittersweet, I am confident that my successor & current colleague Rachna Sizemore-Heizer will serve our district with tremendous care and dedication. I look forward to supporting her efforts!

In closing, my current aide Susan Wiczalkowski has created a Farewell Slideshow to highlight some of my memorable moments on the Board.

Thank you again for this incredible opportunity to serve you and our Braddock District Community.

With immense gratitude,

Megan
