Principal's Message

Dear families,

As we begin Winter Break, our wish is for our community to enjoy family and friends for the two-week period. To help with that, there will be no new tasks assigned and nothing will be due Jan 2 or 3. 2024. Enjoy this time to rest, recharge, laugh, and slow down!

When we return, students will take the Reading and Math Virginia Growth Assessments on Jan. 3 and 4, 2024. These tests are necessary for teachers to monitor student growth and determine what areas need more focus for the second half of the school year. Students cannot study for them; they are scored, but they are not graded and will not be entered in the gradebook. The results of the Math and Reading VGA score will be sent home for you to review with your child as soon as we are able to process them.

Concerning current grades, please check your email this week to see if any teachers have sent a “Progress Report.” We have asked teachers to send progress reports to students (and parents) if they are missing work that could be completed over break. Please look in Schoology for missing assignments to help your student identify work they can do. Break is a good time to catch up if you are behind. If your student completes missing work, they should email their teacher once it is turned in. Teachers will also be on break, and they will find the email when they return in January.

We hope this helps all students meet their academic goals!  Please know that teachers will not be accessing email or grading over the winter break. May all you have a blessed holiday season and Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Tammy Silipigni,

Principal

Congratulations to DOCTOR Maureen Howard, one of our teachers. As educators committed to life-long learning, we are so proud to celebrate the culmination of years of work at George Mason University. Hard work really does make dreams come true!

A Week In Review

This week, we had a fun Spirit week. Enjoy a few pictures below: Tuesday's Candy Cane Colors, Wednesday's Grinch Day, and Friday's Student-Teacher Swap Day. Also, enjoy pictures from our Performing Arts Showcase that occurred during Friday's TA time. Students in chorus, orchestra, band, and theater arts all wowed us with their talents. Finally, see pictures of the fabulous treats that parents donated to honor our staff member in our annual Winter Holiday Dessert Send-off.

A very Merry Christmas to those in our community who celebrate! It is celebrated in many unique ways across the U.S. and the world, most commonly by the joyous giving of gifts. Learn more about Christmas

Student and Family Resources

Fairfax County Public Schools has compiled a list of resources for students and families in case they need assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit our winter resources webpage for links to academic support; mental health support; and food, clothing, housing, and other county resources.

School’s Closed, Learning Can Continue!

FCPS encourages students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during winter break and snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play for your students during winter break or weather-related school closures.

Promoting Mental Wellness During Winter Break

Although mental health indicators have improved over the past year, Fairfax County Youth Survey (FCYS) data suggest that more than 25% of students in 8th to 12th grade feel sad or hopeless every day for two weeks or more in a row. The holidays can be a time to reduce stress, but they can also contribute to it. Here are some tips for making winter break a positive time for the young people in your life.

Free COVID-19 Rapid Tests

Residential households are eligible to receive free at-home COVID-19 test kits. If an order has not been placed for your address since the program reopened on September 25, you may place two orders now.

Save the Date: Academy Open Houses Begin in January!

FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in mid-January.

A high school academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, and/or internships with local businesses.

Learn more and find the calendar of Academy Open Houses.
