Churchill Chatter - Issue 8, December 15, 2023

staff

Happy holidays from the Churchill Road staff!

Dear Churchill Road Families,

These past few weeks have been busy. Our students participated in musical concerts, spirit week, field trips, and today’s Winter parties!  We are so grateful to all the parents who have participated in these activities and volunteered for today’s celebrations.

We especially want to thank our incredible PTA for their generosity for this week’s Secret Snowman!  The cookies and gifts are very much appreciated by the staff during this time.

Thank you to our wonderful staff for all their contributions throughout the year as well. We appreciate all that you do for our students and community..

Before we begin our break, we would like to recognize our librarian, Ashley Scott.  She was recognized as an FCPS CARES of the Month Recipient for October.  Ms. Scott went above and beyond assisting another school librarian and students with books and resources for a student project. Our teachers impact other schools and student in such positive ways!

As a reminder, to ensure students take a well-deserved break, no homework will be assigned over winter break and no assignments will be due immediately following the break. Also, our front office will be closed over winter break.

We hope that you and your family enjoy your time together, and we look forward to welcoming all of our students back in the new year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr and Ms. Jen Niccolls

The Sounds of Music

chorus

Over the past two weeks, our students have showcased their musical abilities.  Sounds of the season filled the air as the Churchill Road Elementary School choruses took to the stage for their annual Winter Concert on December 5 (pictured above). The talented young singers, under the direction of choral director and music specialist Karen Judkins, delighted the audience with a variety of holiday songs.  Many of the songs included choreography designed for the group by 6th grade members of the CRS Chorus. This concert also featured the first performance of Churchill's new 4th grade choral group - the Bobcat Chorus!  Congratulations to all the performers on a wonderful concert.

On December 11, the winter instrumental concert was a great showing of talent and discipline. Ms. Singer is very proud of the hard work the band students have put in so far this year (pictured below).

On  December 11, the Churchill Road 5th & 6th grade Strings performed their annual Winter Concert (pictured below). The performance was the culmination of several months of hard work from the 60 students involved. The students performed a variety of winter themed musical selections for a crowded gymnasium filled with family and community members. The students are very proud of their accomplishment and are looking forward to their next performance opportunity!

Character Strengths Focus

The first week in January, our school community is focusing on the character strength of Optimism.

Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.

Have a wonderful winter break!

Winter Break Student & Family Resources

⛄Student and Family Resources

Fairfax County Public Schools has compiled a list of resources for students and families in case they need assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit our winter resources webpage for links to academic support; mental health support; and food, clothing, housing, and other county resources.

School’s Closed, Learning Can Continue!

FCPS encourages students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during winter break and snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play for your students during winter break or weather-related school closures.

Promoting Mental Wellness During Winter Break

Although mental health indicators have improved over the past year, Fairfax County Youth Survey (FCYS) data suggest that more than 25% of students in 8th to 12th grade feel sad or hopeless every day for two weeks or more in a row. The holidays can be a time to reduce stress, but they can also contribute to it. Here are some tips for making winter break a positive time for the young people in your life.
