Notes from the Nest

In our SEES school community, we S.O.A.R., meaning that we demonstrate: Support, Optimism, Acceptance, and Responsibility.

Dear SEES Families,

This week saw the halls of SEES filled with the beautiful sounds of our talented chorus students during our annual Winter Sing Along! It was a joyous occasion for our PreK-4th graders to listen and sing along to festive melodies.

As a quick reminder, Winter Break begins next Monday, December 18th. School will be closed for students from December 18th through January 1st. This is a well-deserved break for our students and staff to recharge, spend time with loved ones, and create cherished memories.

To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break.

Upcoming Events:

  • Winter Break: December 18th - January 1st (No school for students)
  • First Day Back: January 2nd (Welcome back, Eagles!)

From my nest to yours, I wish you all a restful, joy-filled Winter Break. May your holidays be merry and bright, and may the New Year bring new beginnings and endless possibilities!

SOARing Sincerely,

April Martin
Proud Principal

Winter STEM exCEL Classes

Looking for something fun to do in 2024? Our partnership with STEM exCEL will continue with more computer-based classes starting in January. Register online here.  There are a few seats left in the Minecraft and Game Design.  We are particularly hoping for registrations for the BSTEM class (otherwise this may be cancelled). This unique class presents various STEM subjects using hands-on learning with software and hardware to gain an appreciation for continued and future study. Programming basics like functions, variables and loops will introduce the history of cryptography and its future technological impact.  Students will design and 3D print their own cypher decoder while also learning the fundamentals of Game Design.

Winter Spirit Wear

Thank you to everyone who purchased spirit wear from our online store!  Items were sent home with students today.

Keep Learning Over Winter Break with Tutor.com

Does your child need help getting up to speed in high school math, science, or English? Tutor.com offers diagnostic quizzes to help students test their knowledge and find areas where they may need help. Quizzes can be taken anytime, and students can connect immediately to a tutor.

FCPS students have unlimited access, 24/7, to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most K-12 subjects for however long they need.

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.
