Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Winter Break has arrived, but before we trade backpacks for (hopefully) snow boots for the next two weeks, we want to take a moment to celebrate all that has happened in the school year so far!

Our classrooms have buzzed with energy and curiosity, Teachers have gone above and beyond, creating inspiring learning opportunities. They not only deserve the break, but a huge round of applause!

And thanks to you, our amazing families. From volunteering in classrooms to organizing and supporting school events, your dedication lays the foundation for student success.

To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time.  Our offices will be closed during winter break.

May your break be filled with joy, laughter, and memories. Teachers will be eagerly awaiting seeing your kids again when we buzz back into action on Tuesday, January 2nd. We’ll see you all back in the Hive in 2024!

SEL Screener Information Grades 3-6

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

Attendance Reminders

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to their school. At Stenwood, you can report an absence by using the online form, sending an email, StenwoodElem.Attendance@fcps.edu, or calling the attendance line: 703-208-7776.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

If you need help setting up evening or morning routines to support your child with their attendance, please reach out!  We are happy to help!

Dual Language Immersion Registration Information

All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language. English Language Arts and Social Studies are taught in English. Math, Science, Health, and Target Language Arts are taught in another language. FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application begins on January 22nd (9 a.m.). A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).  For more information including program sites and information sessions, please visit: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/dual-language-immersion-programs-registration.
