Winter Break (Student Holiday)

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 18, to Monday, January 1. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year.Classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024. See the complete school year calendar.

Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Dear SoCo Families,

As we stand on the threshold of the year's final chapter, I am filled with a mix of gratitude, reflection, and a touch of nostalgia. It is with both joy and a hint of sadness that I extend my warmest greetings to you in this, my final December newsletter.

As we navigate the festive season and approach the close of the calendar year, I find myself compelled to pause and express my heartfelt appreciation for the incredible journey we have undertaken together. The memories we've shared, the challenges we've overcome, and the victories we've celebrated have woven a tapestry of learning and growth that will forever be etched in my heart.

Here’s the latest memories from this past week that have made my heart smile.

Athletics:

Monday night, our gymnastic team had a great athletic performance. I want to thank Aldo for once again including some incredible photos from that night. Way to go, SoCo gymnasts!

Tuesday night, we hosted Chantilly at home. I was able to attend the Freshmen Basketball game but had leave at the end. I’m including a set of pics I took of that game, along with the pics Aldo took of the Varsity game.  SoCo Basketball is looking strong this season!

Academics:

As I was walking by Ms. Gannaway’s class, she happened to step out and we had a great conversation about her hallway posters. Students worked in groups to discuss the legacies of the last four Vice Presidents of our United States. The posters were very detailed as you can see below. Way to go, Ms. Gannaway and her students!

We also had student work samples proudly displayed in our library, as Ms. Fischer’s Art students worked hard on their two-point architectural drawings. The amount of detail and perspective in each piece is outstanding! Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but I think all eyes will agree that these pieces are especially impressive!

Students Celebrating the Holidays:

Tuesday and Wednesday during lunches, our DECA students sold holiday merchandise. Not only were the products high quality, but the salesmanship and creativity were arguably the aspects I most enjoyed. Here are just a sample of our student entrepreneurs.

In addition to these wonderful holiday gift sales, the front office staff were pleasantly surprised to be serenaded to by Ms. Moshos and her Latin students singing holiday songs to us in Latin. They even brought delicious cupcakes for the staff to enjoy. Was I wrong to eat two?

Mid-week, our Performing Arts department once again hosted our annual Tiny Tots program to our feeder school elementary students. While everyone who attended had a great time, I had difficulty determining who enjoyed the concert more: the elementary students or our high school performers!

Staff Celebrations and Recognitions:

Thursday and Friday afternoon, we were able to enjoy recognizing staff for their various talents and contributions. First on Thursday, we held a holiday cookie swap and gave out gifts for staff. It was a wonderful time of fellowship with each other.

We also took time to recognize our staff who earned one of four awards, which are listed below. These incredible individuals embody the very spirit of excellence, dedication, and passion that makes South County High School a beacon of learning and growth in FCPS. Congratulations to these ultra talented Stallions!

  • Outstanding Teacher: Carol Floto, English Teacher
  • Outstanding Professional Employee: Megan Cooper, Student Services Counselor
  • Outstanding Operational Employee: Connie Gibson, Principal’s Administrative Assistant
  • Outstanding School Leader: Claudia Pirouzan-Jones, Assistant Principal

Lastly, our Student Leadership class conducted the judging for our Door Decorating Contest. It was a very competitive event, and I know the students had a difficult time splitting hairs with determining the eventual winners.

Congratulations to the English department for winning overall. The judges felt strongly that they couldn’t just pick 3 individual winners.  Since English and History had the most participants, they went with a top 3 in History and a top 3 in English, the remainder doors were put into a top 3 competition.

The Top 3 History Winners are Ms. Allen, Mr. Canard, and Ms. Hill.

The Top 3 English Winners are Mrs. Ward, Ms. Lipsey, and Ms. Armstrong.

The Top 3 Winners from “All Other Doors” are Ms. Straughn, Ms. Dellavedova, and Mr. Long.

So, as we wrap up another year of shared successes and cherished moments, let's embark on this new journey together. From holiday festivities to reflections on the past and aspirations for the future, I invite you to join me in savoring the richness of the present and embracing the promise that the new year brings.

Wishing you and your families a December filled with warmth, joy, and the spirit of togetherness.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Kambar
