Winter Break is Almost Here!

winter break

We look forward to an eventful week as we head into winter break! Winter break is December 18-January 1st. FCPS Design and Construction will be finishing some HVAC while the building is empty. Therefore, our school office will be closed during the break. We wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a wonderful winter break of family, friends and fun.We are excited to see you when we all return to school January 2, 2024!

🙋‍♂️ Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We often notice more empty seats in our classrooms as winter break approaches. This year, let's work together to nurture a rock-solid attendance habit. Every hour of every school day is a unique opportunity for students to learn, connect, and grow.

A big thank you to:

  • 🌟 Students who show up every day and the parents/caregivers supporting them.
  • 👩‍🏫 Teachers who create a welcoming environment for learning.
  • 👨‍💼 Administrators who provide a safe and engaging place to grow.
  • 👏 Bus drivers, support staff, and volunteers who lend a helping hand to all our learners.

If you or your child need support, please reach out to our school social worker or family liaison. If your child is not feeling well, please refer to the When Should I Keep My Child Home? webpage for guidance.

There will be no school from Monday, December 18, to Monday, January 1, 2024, for winter break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 2

Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources.

Kiss and Ride Reminder

kiss and ride

There has been an increase in cars stopping in the parking lot to drop off children close to door one in the morning. This is not safe with buses and cars in motion. It also holds up the kiss and ride line from moving forward. If you are driving your child to school, it is expected that you drive through the kiss and ride lane for drop off at door 2. If you need to escort your child to the building, please park your car in a parking space and walk to door 2. Thank you for supporting a safe and smooth arrival at school for everyone.

Snuggle Up and Read Night is Tuesday!!!

snuggle up

Parklawn Elementary will host our annual Snuggle Up and Read Night on Tuesday, December 12th, 2023, from 6:00-7:30. Wear your pajamas and join us for a fun night of reading with your family and friends. Parents can learn tips to help their child with reading and writing.  All children will choose a free book to take home.

Tuesday will be a Pajama Day! Students and staff may wear their pajamas all day in honor of our evening event!

Monthly Family Market is Thursday!

market

Come visit Parklawn’s Family Market each month! We’re partnering with the @Capital Area Food Bank to offer fresh produce and dry goods to members of the Parklawn community, free of charge. Doors open at 5 pm and groceries are available on a first-come first-serve basis. You are encouraged to bring bags/baskets to carry home groceries. We’ll see you there!

🍲 Food Insecurity Resources for Families

Food insecurity impacts more than 60,000 Fairfax County residents. There are many resources available to support those who need food assistance. Find out how to receive or offer support on the Fairfax County website, or view their Human Services Resource Guide for assistance with food, clothing, housing, and other services.

Snow Days This Winter

snow day

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.
