Dear Poplar Tree Families,
We wanted to highlight a recent update regarding snow days. If the weather forecast for January and February are accurate we might have some snow days this winter.
For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.
During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):
Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

Next week, December 11 - 15, we will celebrate the countdown to Winter Break with a fun Spirit Week! Can't wait to see all our winter vibes throughout the building!
 Season's Readings Photo Challenge
The joy of reading doesn't stop just because we're on vacation! Submit a photo of your student reading during Winter Break for a chance to win a bookish prize. They can be pictured reading alone, with a furry friend, with a buddy, or with a family member! Photos will be shared on the morning news show and on Poplar Tree social media accounts. Participants will be entered to win a randomly drawn $25 Barnes & Noble gift card. Please make a separate entry for each student for the prize drawing. One drawing entry will be given per student but feel free to submit more than one reading photo! Deadline to submit is Sunday, January 7. Submit your photo HERE!

Screener Results Coming Soon!
One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.
Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.
The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful. The week of December 11th, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

🧤🧣 SCA Winter Gear Drive 🧥
The SCA is collecting winter tear to donate to local homeless shelters to support our surrounding community. We will be collecting from now until December 15.
**Please note: Any winter items still in the lost and found on December 15 will also be added to the donation!!**

🍬 Candy Jar Fundraiser 🍭
Starting Wednesday December 7 through Wednesday, December 13, the SCA will be hosting a SCA Fundraiser! Students can make a guess for how much candy is in the candy jar for $0.25 a guess. The jar will be in the lobby during arrival time (8:20 - 8:40).
Closest guess without going over will win the candy!

💻 Virginia Growth Assessment 📈
The winter window is upon us for our Virginia Growth Assessments. These standardized state tests are given to students in grades 3-6. Please see the winter VGA dates below.

🏀 CHS Basketball Pyramid Night🏀
Come to Chantilly High School on January 3 for two Varsity Basketball Double Headers! We will be celebrate Pyramid Night and we welcome families from our feeder schools to attend one or both games!
- 5:30 Girls Varsity vs. Stafford HS
- 7:30 Boys Varsity vs. Stafford HS
- Varsity Sideline Cheer will be at both games as well 🎉📣
All feeder students get in free to the games with a paying adult. Wear school spirit gear or school colors!
 🤖 Robotics Workshop 🤖
Interested in learning more about robotics and programming? Attend a robotics workshop on Saturday, December 17 from 3:00 - 5:15 at the Chantilly Regional Library. The workshop is for students in grades 4-6 and is put on by some of our alumni from Poplar Tree! Registration is FREE! Sign up HERE!
🍪 Sweet Treat for Teachers! 🍥
Help the PTA send the PTES staff home with a variety of delicious holiday cookies next week! Volunteer to provide a minimum of 3 dozen cookies next Thursday, December 14. Please bring all donations by noon. Staff will create a box of sweet treats to take home and enjoy. 🐝Sign-up is open for the Spelling Bee🐝
The Poplar Tree PTA has been planning for a successful spelling bee program for 2023-2024. Poplar Tree is proud to offer students an opportunity to exhibit their proficiency in the art of spelling and, just as importantly, vocabulary. The school Spelling Bee Champion will advance to the Fairfax County regional competition. The regional winner will go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee representing Fairfax County.
The registration deadline is 01/31/24.
