A Message from Mr. Smith

Dear Franconia Families,

Winter Break is here!  On behalf of all the staff at FES, I want to extend our best wishes for a joyful and relaxing winter break. May your break be filled with making great memories with your families and friends.

In order for our staff to rejuvenate and spend quality time with their families, I am asking them to disconnect from email over the Winter Break. Staff will be back online Tuesday, January 2. Wishing you a safe and happy break and we look forward to welcoming your children back in the new year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Smith, Principal

Don’t miss this awesome opportunity to support ALL Penguins!

Did you know?

  • The current classroom rugs at Franconia Elementary are over 10 years old and are well overdue for an upgrade.
  • The average classroom of students spends about 40% of their classroom time on the carpet!

How can I help?

  • Donate what you can so that we can give our amazing teachers NEW rugs for the NEW year!!
  • Spread the word to your family, friends, and our local community!

If we work together, we can make it happen. Your donation will benefit every student and every classroom at Franconia Elementary. A $20 contribution from each FES student would help us achieve our goal, but no donation is too big or too small!

Our fundraising goal is $10,000!

Remember, your donation is tax-deductible

Click here to donate through the PTA Member Hub or via check made payable to Franconia Elementary PTA.

 Inclement Weather Plan Update

As mentioned in Superintendent Reid’s Weekly Reflections, FCPS will not have virtual learning when school is closed due to inclement weather for the 2023-24 school year.

Eleven snow days are built into our existing calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will enable us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

You are encouraged to share ideas for learning about winter that students can use during winter break and snow days. Email ideas to WinterDiscovery@fcps.edu.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Volunteer for Career Day

Franconia Elementary School will be hosting a Career Day entitled “Oh the Places You’ll Go” inspired by Dr. Seuss.  The event will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 9:10-10:40 ( inclement weather: Friday, March 22, 2024- same time).

On Career Day,  you are invited to come and share with our students about your career and the importance of staying in school.  If you are a person who has a career that will interest K-6 students and enjoys enthusiastically speaking in front of children, then we need you! If interested, please complete the Google Form HERE. The last day to submit your interest is by February 16, 2024. For further questions, please contact school counselor, Veronica Guillion at 703-822-2200.

Full-Time AAP Referral Window Reminder for Parents

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time (Level IV) Referral Form to Jo-Anne Fouad, jpfouad@fcps.edu  or Katelyn Glines kjglines@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2023

The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Jo-Anne Fouad, jpfouad@fcps.edu  or Katelyn Glines kjglines@fcps.edu

Referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific AAP or part-time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for full-time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

The week of December 11th, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

Calendar Reminders

December 7-15 - Chanukah

Chanukah, an 8-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for 8 days. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Thursday, December 7. That day will be a half-O day, and major events cannot be scheduled that evening. Learn more about Chanukah in National Geographic Kids

December 18 - January 1 - Winter Break (Student Holiday)

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 18, to Monday, January 1. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year.

Classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

Reporting an Absence or Change to Dismissal

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

  • Absence
  • Late arrival
  • Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
    • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
    • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
    • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits
  • Changes in dismissal mode (https://franconiaes.fcps.edu/about/change-dismissal-form)

Below are the 3 options by which to notify the school office (choose one option):

Please do this IN ADDITION to contacting your child's teacher.  There could be times when the teacher is absent and, by also contacting the office, the information will be properly noted.

To email your child’s teacher, click HERE.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
