Dear Dogwood Dragons and families,

Tis the season for wonderful activities after school. This week, we have a chorus concert, the Glow Walk and our Clothing Giveaway. We are excited about all three events. Our Glow Walk is a fun activity to get in some steps, play and celebrate community and healthy living. We will take a night walk from Dogwood Elementary to the community center. This was a lot of fun last year. Please join us to play together.

Our clothing giveaway is a way to boost your ever-growing child’s wardrobe. Our children grow fast and keeping them clothed through the seasons seems like an ongoing challenge. This year we have accepted gently used children’s clothing that is now too small for them so you may re-gift it to your growing child so it goes to good use. On December 5th, parents will be allowed to shop at 3:45-5:30. You may collect as many clothes in one provided bag, per child, that you are shopping for. If there are clothes left over we will open our doors to our lobby during the day, where you may shop and collect whatever you need for your children. Happy Shopping.

Dr. Reid has officially stated if it snows this year, we will have actual snow days. The school system accounts for up to 11 days for snow. Since the pandemic we had been doing virtual days after the first five. This year we will have traditional snow days. If school is off, your child will have the day to play in the snow or snuggle inside.

We look forward to seeing you over these next few weeks. Winter break is just around the corner.

With great appreciation,

Kate Beckner, Principal

Winter

❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and plan for childcare if needed.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create lessons, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your student’s results or ideas to support them at home, review this Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

Chanukah

Chanukah

Chanukah, an 8-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for 8 days. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Thursday, December 7. That day will be a half-O day, and major events cannot be scheduled that evening. Learn more about Chanukah in National Geographic Kids. See the complete school year calendar.

Bodhi Day

Happy Bodhi Day to those in our community who celebrate! This year's Bodhi Day artwork was created by Longfellow Middle School student Mina L. Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday that recognizes the day that Buddha achieved enlightenment through meditation under the Bodhi tree. #OurFCPSMina’s artwork was designed as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students.
