It is incredible it is already December! We are proud of the learning taking place like the 3rd grade writers above and the 5th graders demonstrating critical & creative thinking below.
- Please continue to send your child in with layers and label any jackets, hats, gloves, and water bottles so we can help your child keep track of their belongings. We go outdoors for recess and offer outdoor lunch even in cooler temperatures and want to ensure all students can safely participate.
- As a reminder, this week our grades 3-6 students will be taking the winter VGA assessment of the year. These reading and math are tests are used to measure growth on current grade level standards, help teachers determine next steps for instruction, and prepare students for their SOLs. Please have your child at school on time each day to help us and them!
- As you may know, each December we host a winter luncheon to thank and celebrate all our staff. To make this happen, we need additional volunteers to cover classrooms and the cafeteria and could use prizes for our games. Prizes could be "white elephant" style gifts or gift cards to any store/website. If you are able to make a donation, please drop gifts off in the office before Wednesday, December 13 and thank you!
- In conjunction with the PTA, we are also collecting canned foods and gift cards to Walmart/Target/Safeway/Giant for Lemon Road families in need. These can also be dropped off in the office and will be distributed before the winter break.
Looking forward to a wonderful two weeks of learning - thank you for your partnership!
Only two more weeks until Winter Break - but lots happening at Lemon Road!
- Our Students will be celebrating their Readathon Success with a Hot Cocoa bar at recess on December 8th from the PTA. The Top Readers and Fundraisers in each grade will also receive an individual prize from the PTA that day. Sign up here to help run the hot cocoa bar!
- Our Holiday Food Drive started on Dec 1st - drop canned food into the Minion Box in the lobby or donate visa gift cards using the amazon link to help us keep local families fed this holiday season! Thank you for your support!
- We will be treating the Lemon Road Staff to a special winter hot cocoa and cookies bar on December 8th - if you would like to help please email us at lemonroadpta@gmail.com
- Class Winter Party planning is underway across the school - please reach out to your class Room Parents if you haven’t heard details as yet as they will appreciate your support!
- Our December Restaurant night will be at MOD Pizza on December 14th - just quote Lemon Road when ordering to help support the PTA!

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. When thinking about how to help them through conversation, it can be useful to validate, rather than dismiss, their feelings, help them reappraise the situation, and carefully point out logic/thinking errors that may block them from healing.
If your family is seeking ways to take action, consider donating to the canned food drive or gift card collections listed above!
As we approach the end of 2023, we’d like to remind families about the policies for student cell phone use during the school day. Per the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R):
- Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
- Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day.
- Smart watches may be worn, but all phone features (texting, internet viewing, pictures, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
Thank you for your support.
In case you missed it in FCPS This Week, the school division shared updates on the following topics:
- How FCPS Announces Weather Closings
- Keeping Your Child Warm
- Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results
Read FCPS This Week to learn more about these topics. If you are not already receiving the weekly newsletter, please sign up today.
One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.
The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.
Families can view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us at Lemon Road.
