A Message from Dr. Jemison, Fort Belvoir Primary Principal
Fort Belvoir Primary Families,
It is with great enthusiasm that I share the exciting developments that have unfolded during this remarkable week at Fort Belvoir Primary. The strides we’ve made in enhancing our math curriculum reflect our unwavering commitment to fostering a learning environment that nurtures analytical thinking and academic excellence. Currently, the data reflects 86% of kindergarten students met fall benchmark goals, 50% of first graders either met or exceeded benchmark goals, and 53.5% of second graders either met or exceeded benchmark goals.
Our dedicated team of educators has been diligently working to implement more rigorous math lessons tailored to challenge our students. By doing so, we aim to instill in them the skills and mindset necessary to become analytical thinkers, equipping them for success not only academically but also in their daily lives.
You may recall our recent math professional development sessions taking place last month, where our teachers engaged in valuable training to further their teaching methodologies. The knowledge and insights gained during these sessions have played a pivotal role in shaping the enhanced math curriculum we are now presenting to our students.
Our overarching goal is clear: to ensure that the majority of children in our care performs at, or preferably above, grade level in both literacy and math. I am optimistic about this goal and confident that we can achieve it. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to Fort Belvoir Primary and the success of our students. As your principal, I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress as well as celebrating future achievements together.
Together we are Fort Belvoir strong today and forever!
In partnership,
Dr. LaZedrick (Zed) Jemison, Principal

Introducing the Wall of Fame!
We are thrilled to announce the inauguration of our “Wall of Fame,” where we will be showcasing the outstanding achievements and positive contributions of our students. Every two weeks, teachers will have the honor of selecting a student who has made a significant impact in their classrooms. While we aspire to feature every child on our esteemed wall in the frames, we have devised a creative solution by adding additional names to our morning news segment.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our two exceptional artists, Ms. Symone Simmons and Ms. Rhea Harris-Fox, whom are serving as our dedicated art teachers. Their passion for fostering creative thinking among our students is truly commendable, and we are grateful for the artistic guidance they provide.
A Safe and Inclusive Environment for All
Creating a positive and inclusive learning environment is paramount for students’ well-being and academic success. At Fort Belvoir Primary, we prioritize self-regulation as a crucial aspect of students’ development. Feeling safe is fundamental, and we are implementing Conscious Discipline strategies throughout our school to ensure a secure and nurturing atmosphere. Recognizing the three brain states-Executive (focused on learning), Emotional (seeking love and connection), and Survival (ensuring safety)-guides our approach.
We strive to foster an environment where students can readily answer these questions positively. To enhance the sense of belonging, we encourage families to contribute by placing a picture in their child’s backpack or sharing one for display (upon teacher request) on the family wall within the classroom, as it helps students see themselves reflected in our school community. This proactive engagement reinforces the positive and inclusive atmosphere we aim to cultivate at Fort Belvoir Primary.
Additional information about Conscious Discipline is linked HERE for families to read.
Fort Belvoir Elementary Schools Family Market Success
The week before Thanksgiving, both Fort Belvoir Schools organized a Family Market event in collaboration with Capital Area Food Bank, members of the Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Inc. Fairfax County Chapter, and the United Soldiers and Sailors of America to provide support for families in need. Nearly three hundred turkeys and other supplies were distributed to families, and close to two hundred families received essential food items. The collective effort of our partners, family ambassadors, and volunteers was instrumental in making this event a success. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their generosity and dedication in helping us support our school community during these challenging times. Together, we exemplify the strength and unity that make Fort Belvoir a resilient and supportive community.
Special Guests at School Assembly
Recently, Jenni and Tom Turkey made a special appearance at our school, captivating the attention of first and second graders during an engaging assembly. The informative session featured Mr. Kevin Walter from the Fort Belvoir Hunting and Fishing program, who shared fascinating insights about wild turkeys in the state of Virginia. Students were enthralled as they discovered the historical significance of turkeys as our nation’s first mascot before the iconic bald eagle took on that role. The event not only provided an educational experience but also sparked curiosity and appreciation for the diverse wildlife in our region.
Thriving Reading Culture of Books
 |
|
We are delighted to report a significant increase in book checkouts at our school library over the past weeks, with an impressive range of 300-400 books borrowed by students. This surge is a testament to the dedication of our outstanding teachers and the exceptional efforts of our librarian, Ms. Jennifer Kalletta. |
Ms. Kalletta’s passion for creating a love of reading among students is evident in her engaging approach, and she plays a pivotal role in this achievement. Our morning meeting routines include a platform for students to share their current reads with peers, fostering a community of readers. Moreover, students are encouraged to express their thoughts in writing about their reading experiences during class. These initiatives align with our school’s ongoing commitment to ensure that the majority of students are reading either at or above their grade level.
Balloons over Broadway Parade
Before embarking on Thanksgiving break, second grade students engaged in a festive and educational experience by delving into the world of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Through the captivating book “Balloons over Broadway,” they explored the rich history behind the iconic parade in New York CIty. Immersed in the creative process, students learned about the intricate designs and sketching techniques involved in bringing the larger-than-life balloons to life. To culminate their learning journey, the students were given the exciting opportunity to channel their creativity and craft their own balloons. The school echoed with joy as these budding artists proudly paraded their imaginative creations upstairs, adding a touch of whimsy to their pre-holiday atmosphere.

Notes from the Advance Academic Resource Teacher
|
Full-Time (Level IV) AAP Services
Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science). Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:
- Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
- Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.
Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.
Full-Time (Level IV) AAP Referral and Deadline
Parent referrals to be considered for Full Time AAP (Level IV) services for the 2023-2024 school year for current students in grades 2-6 are due no later than December 15.

Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place where we will post an emergency weather closing. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and plan for childcare if appropriate.
FCPS Cares!
The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Fort Belvoir Primary ES. We love our FBES staff members, let's tell them how we feel!
