Ms. Mirnaly Vega

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

Thank you to all of the chaperones who joined our 3rd graders to the Smithsonian  Museum of Natural History and our 4th graders to Gunston Hall!  We are so grateful for so many families that want to participate in our activities.  November was Family Engagement Month and we know many of you were here multiple times, so thank you for partnering with us.  As you know, we value family engagement more than just in the month of November, so please continue to look for opportunities to come in for the grade-level Family Invite Events, Field Trips, and other volunteer opportunities.  Have you considered coming to your child's classroom to read a book? If you are interested, reach out to your classroom teacher. We are also seeking many volunteers for the annual Holiday Shop. Your support is greatly appreciated in any capacity you are available on Friday December 8th.

With kindness,

Mirnaly Vega and Tim Scesney

Principal and Assistant Principal

Share Your Thoughts about World Languages

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Fairfax County Public Schools is considering expansion of our Dual Language Immersion programs to include new languages and school sites, as well as an expansion of new languages for our Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program.

Please take our survey to let us know your thoughts about expanding World Languages elementary program offerings. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Urdu, and Vietnamese. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous. This means FCPS cannot connect your response to you or your students.

The survey is optional and will close on Friday, December 8. Thank you for your time.

Weather Closure

❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place where we will post an emergency weather closing. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and plan for childcare if appropriate.

SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener in October, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms  are available online for Elementary (K-6),  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child's teacher prior to Family Life Education instruction. Sleepy Hollow will be instructing the Human Growth and Development lessons for grades 4 and 5 during the week of December 11

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) . FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online. Sleepy Hollow will host a FLE information night on Tuesday, December 5th at 5:00 PM via ZOOM. Program questions may be addressed to Dr. Tatyana Cottle, TVCottle@fcps.edu

Library News

Thank you for all the book donations - such amazing titles and selection have been shared and we are so thankful!  The December 4th giveaway kicks off our first-ever Read-a-Thon and students are so excited to get a book to keep and start reading!  Did you know that in the library, students have free choice of the books they select; the giveaway is another opportunity for making their own selection of what they want to read.  Self-choice is really important for getting kids interested in reading and it is amazing that they will all start the Read-a-Thon by picking a book they like.  If you find more books at home that you'd like to donate, please keep sending them in and we will happily store them for the next giveaway later in the year - thank you so much for your generosity!
