Dear Fairhill Families
It’s hard to believe that we are almost in December of 2023! This calendar year has gone by fast. With three weeks left before winter break, this is a great time to recommit to great attendance during December and the new year. Did you know that all schools in Virginia are now accredited based on student attendance just like they are for math, reading, writing, and science? Fairhill is proud to be a fully accredited school across all domains, including attendance and we need your help and consistent focus to keep that accreditation. Here are three ways to continue to have strong attendance:
- If your child has an appointment, please send them to school for part of the day. Either pick them up early or send them in late.
- If you are planning a family trip, please schedule that to be as aligned to the school calendar as much as possible.
- If your child is well enough to attend school, please send them. Page 2 of THIS health fly is a great resource to guide that decision.
As always, we are here to support your child and family in all things Fairhill, including attendance. If you plan to have your child miss a day, please remember to fill out the attendance form found here: https://fairhilles.fcps.edu/about/attendance-form.
All our best,
Ted & Courtney
Get ready, Fairhill! The Book Fair is coming!
Get Ready! Our Book Fair is happening next week! Every purchase made raises funds for our library. Family Night will be Tuesday, December 5 from 5:30-7:30 pm., and students will also have the chance to purchase with their classes on either Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, 12/6-8. Please consider donating to our All for Books ewallet, which will help place books in the hands of students who would otherwise not be able to participate. Visit https://shop.scholastic.com/ewallet/fund?lang=en_US&walletId=31bdcef7-4507-4dcf-8921-badfcf9c53dc to help a Fairhill student purchase their very own book! We look forward to seeing you at Family Night!
Attendance Counts! #SchoolEveryDay
Attendance is critical for academic success.
Chronic absenteeism — which is defined as a student missing 10% or more of school for any reason — is a concern across Virginia school districts. Although FCPS continues to outperform the state average in attendance rates, we are tracking chronic absenteeism closely.
Data shows that:
- Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
- Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
- Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
- By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
- Please see the Fairhill Attendance Website for information.

Holiday Gifting For Fairhill Elementary Staff
Want to thank Fairhill staff for all that they do? Our PTA has made it easy to send them a gift card through GiftCrowd. Click on the staff member's link and send them a gift card with your name and a note. The deadline for joining gifts is 12/15/2023 12:00 PM. Click here to access the Fairhill Elementary Gifting Page.
What is GiftCrowd?
GiftCrowd is the most convenient way to give gifts as a group. Families can contribute any amount they choose to any Fairhill staff and include a personal greeting. On the target date, the recipient will receive a notification and access to the gift. They can then read the greetings, send thank you notes, and choose how to redeem the collected amount into one or more gift cards from hundreds of brands.
How Does It Work?
Click here to view the list of Fairhill staff. Click on “Join” next to the staff member you wish to gift. Enter your information and the amount you wish to contribute. You can even include a message and/or a picture.
