Principal's Message

11-30

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Thank you to all of the parent chaperones who supported our students on their field trips this week! We are grateful for your partnership and support of these learning experiences.

We will be packing the next two weeks before Winter Break with plenty of learning and fun activities for everyone in the building. We are excited to have a Winter Spirit week during the week of December 11th. More information can be found below in the Wise Words. Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Per the weather reports, the cold winds of winter are blowing in this week. Throughout the winter weather, FCPS and Shrevewood monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. At this time, it is our intention to have outdoor recess opportunities this week.

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Social Worker, Heather Colby (hcolby@fcps.edu), can assist you. You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Lost & Found

lost and found

Our lost and found collection is overflowing, and we need your help to make sure these items find their way home! Please stop by the cafeteria when you are here to claim any items that might belong to you. All items not collected before Winter Break will be donated.

🧼 Staying Healthy This Cold/Flu Season

Cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses often rise this time of year. It is important for students to wash their hands regularly and cover their coughs and sneezes. Please monitor your child’s health daily and follow recommendations for when to keep them home due to illness. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance webpage for more tips.

Girls on the Run

The Shrevewood based Girls on the Run (GOTR) team is collecting winter coats to support the Providence District Winter Gear Drive until winter break.  Please feel free to send in gently used coats/vests and have your student(s) place them in the blue and white box (with gold lettering) right inside the main doors of the school building. We appreciate your support in helping keep our community warm this winter. Thank you to those who already donated.

A huge congrats to all the girls for successfully completing the GOTR 5K on Sunday, November 19. It was a great season. Also, keep your eyes out for announcements for the spring season.

AAP Information & Referrals

Thank you to the families who joined us for the AAP Parent Information Sessions on October 18.  If you were unable to come to one of the sessions, you may access the information presented in the slides linked here. Slides in Spanish are available in two parts: Spanish part 1 and Spanish part 2.

You may use this link to locate all AAP Forms, including translated referrals for Spanish, Farci, Korean, Chinese, Urdu, and Vietnamese. We have the English forms linked below for easy access.

Here is the AAP Full Time Services Referral Form. The Parent Questionnaire is only necessary when referring for Full Time Services.  Only students in 2nd-7th grade may be referred for Full Time Services. AAP Full Time Services referrals are due to April Done no later than December 15th.

Students in K-6th may be referred for Subject Specific Differentiated Services and Part Time Services designated referral form.

Finally, you will also find the AAP Program of Services Chart.  This chart provides an overview of the services provided.

If you have further questions about any of this information, please contact April Done at ardone@fcps.edu.

p2

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage the character strength of supporting others with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Change in Transportation Protocol

If playdates are planned, the Shrevewood office team must receive notifications from the parents of all students involved.  Playdate notifications may be made via the online Change in Transportation Form or via an email sent to SWESOffice@fcps.edu. For any changes in transportation, please make sure to contact the office no later 3:00 pm.

Procedures when you come to join your children for lunch:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.
