Woodburn Families,

What a week!  Thank you for supporting our Book Fair and for participating in Math Night.  Our students are skilled mathematicians. It was great to see Wildcats making estimates, snow predictions, and playing newly learned math games alongside their families and peers.  We hope the fun will continue at home!

See below for information about our new rock wall, upcoming winter assessments, and the PTA Gingerbread House Decorating event. Stay warm, Wildcats!

Together We Grow,

Attendance Reminders

With two weeks left before winter break, this is a great time to recommit to great attendance during December and the new year. Did you know that all schools in Virginia are now accredited based on student attendance just like they are for math, reading, writing, and science?

Here are three ways to continue to have strong attendance:

  1. If your child has an appointment, please send them to school for part of the day. Either pick them up early or send them in late.
  2. If you are planning a family trip, please schedule that to be as aligned to the school calendar as much as possible.
  3. If your child is well enough to attend school, please send them. Page 2 of THIS health flyer is a great resource to guide that decision.

As always, we are here to support your child and family in all things Woodburn, including attendance. If you plan to have your child miss a day, please remember to contact the school.

Woodburn's New Rock Wall!

RW

It's official, our rock wall has been installed!  We are so excited for our students to use our new gym equipment.

In the coming weeks, all students will have the opportunity to learn about how to use the rock wall safely.  Pictures to come!

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards. The format and timing of state assessments vary by grade level and content area.

These include:

  • Fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) standardized tests in reading and mathematics. More information is available on the VGA webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43932);
  • Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science. More information is available on the SOL assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/35021);
  • Ongoing local alternative assessments (LAAs) including performance-based assessments (PBAs) completed as part of classroom instruction in science, writing, and social studies; More information is available on the LAA and PBA webpage

PTA Gingerbread House Event

Woodburn will celebrate winter and all things sweet by building gingerbread houses on December 15. This activity is a favorite event among our Wildcats. The Woodburn PTA is hosting this event and is covering the basics, but since we are doing this event school-wide, we need your help with decoration donations. If you are able, please send a nut-free donation for your student's grade by Monday, December 11.

Suggested donations include:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Skittles
  • M&M's
  • Swedish Fish
  • Fruit loops or other colored cereal
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Pastel mints, smarties, or other small colorful candies

Snow Day Challenge!

Have you submitted your guess?! When do you think we will have our first snow day?  Join our student and staff challenge and take a guess!  Winners will be announced and celebrated!

Deadline extended - All submissions due by Tuesday, December 5th.

Window for Full-time AAP Referrals Closes on Dec.15, 2023

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time (Level IV) Referral Form to Amanda Manno (acmanno@fcps.edu) no later than December 15, 2023

The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Amanda Manno (acmanno@fcps.edu).

Referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific AAP or part-time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for full-time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
