Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Good afternoon, SoCo family!

Happy first weekend of December! I don’t know about anyone else, but 2023 still sounds new to me. And as we enter this final month of the calendar year, we’re gearing up for transitioning into a new 2024! I know it’s probably a sign of my age, but time is flying by so quickly. This month is a time that I always enjoy reflecting on the year behind me and looking forward to the things ahead. Speaking of that, let’s reflect on this week!

School Culture

A few weeks ago, I was talking with three teachers at a Tardy Station. We were sharing ideas from our past experiences about ways to have a fun, school-spirited holiday season. One of the teachers asked about having a door decorating contest in December. I have had plenty of experiences with this in all four of my previous school tenures, so I was certainly in favor of that type of creativity. So, with the help of our Sports Leadership students, we’re ready to host our 2023 SoCo Door Decorating Contest! I know it’s early, but we already have a few doors that are ready to compete. Check them out below.

Student Celebrations

On Friday, our Systems of Support Advisor (Mr. Mims), our Dean of Students (Mr. Vossler), and I were able to host a celebration with some of our students. It’s important to recognize the successes that our students reach periodically, and this is the first time since I arrived last year that we purposefully scheduled a time to recognize the improvements our students are making in the areas of attendance, behavior, and grades. I’m so proud of the growth these great students are making!

The Craft Show on Saturday was SPECTACULAR, as usual. The PTSO somehow continues to up their game year after year. As I arrived at 10:00am, the parking lot was jam packed, and there was a line of customers waiting to enter the school. Crafters love that! From the hallways to the cafeteria to the gym, there was a great amount of variety for all shoppers. This is perhaps our biggest community event, and it was so nice to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

I was out of work at a three-day conference in Williamsburg this week (which was PHENOMENAL, by the way!), so that’s all I have for you.

I hope everyone enjoys breaking out the winter clothes and blankets. Winter is here!

senior dues

Senior Dues are $100 and help to cover the costs of Graduation and are due by March 22.

The easiest way to pay is through My School Bucks.

Cash or checks are also accepted and can be made out to South County High School and can be given to Mr. Kingston in A125 or Mrs. Hill in Room A119.

Senior Dues need to be paid in order for students to attend prom or the Senior trip to King’s Dominion, or Graduation.

audition

Have you ever thought about being on stage? Consider yourself a bit…dramatic? Then come on out to the student-directed one-act auditions on December 7 and 8! One-acts are a series of short plays directed by upperclassmen theatre arts students. Auditions are open to all SCHS students! It is a great opportunity to get yourself onstage and is one of the most popular theatre events of the season. To learn more information, please visit schstheatre.com or click here (you must be logged into your FCPS e-mail to access). There will be two audition interest meetings: one on Monday, November 27 and the other on Friday, December 1 from 3:10-4 PM in the Black Box (G139). If you have any questions, please e-mail Molly Rumberger at mdrumberger@fcps.edu

National Special Education Day

National Special Education Day is recognized each year on Dec. 2 and commemorates President Gerald Ford’s signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975. We celebrate our teachers and staff who serve and support our students with special needs, as well as our families who are partners in the education and support of those students!

Chanukah

Chanukah, an 8-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for 8 days. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on Thursday, December 7. That day will be a half-O day, and major events cannot be scheduled that evening. Learn more about Chanukah in National Geographic Kids. See the complete school year calendar.

Bodhi Day

Bodhi Day

Bodhi Day, Friday, December 8, is the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year, including Bodhi Day. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.Learn more about Bodhi Day in this video from the Miami Children’s Museum. See the complete school year calendar.
