Principal's Message

thanksgiving

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We have already had an incredible week at Shrevewood, and we still have our Mad Science Holidaze assembly to look forward to tomorrow! Thank you so much to all of the families and friends who joined us for our Thanksgiving lunch yesterday. It was heartwarming to see all of the smiles throughout the cafeteria. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped make the event a great one! And thank you to the kindergarten and 1st grade families for your patience and flexibility as we worked through the delay to the start of our event. We appreciate you all. We have much to be thankful for each and every day!

We will not send out a Wise Words newsletter next week because of the Thanksgiving holiday break. As a reminder, Schools and offices will be closed Wednesday, November 22, through Friday, November 24. Classes will resume on Monday, November 27. We wish you and your family a joy filled time together!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

🧼 Staying Healthy This Cold/Flu Season

Cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses often rise this time of year. It is important for students to wash their hands regularly and cover their coughs and sneezes. Please monitor your child’s health daily and follow recommendations for when to keep them home due to illness. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance webpage for more tips.

Girls on the Run Winter Gear Drive

gotr1

The Shrevewood based Girls on the Run (GOTR) team is collecting winter coats to support the Providence District Winter Gear Drive.  Please feel free to send in gently used coats/vests and have your student(s) place them in the blue and white box (with gold lettering) right inside the main doors of the school building.  We appreciate your support in helping keep our community warm this winter.

A special good luck to all of our Girls running in the GOTR 5K this Sunday. Also, keep your eyes out for announcements regarding the GOTR spring season.

outstanding

Each year FCPS strives to recognize outstanding staff throughout the county. This is an opportunity to recognize staff in any and all capacities. Both staff and community members can nominate Shrevewood Staff. You do not need to nominate for all categories. To submit a nomination for a Shrevewood Outstanding Employee please complete your nomination through this Google Form by November 17. You may nominate an employee in one or more categories. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category listed in the form.

If you have any questions, contact Kimberly Adams (kmadams@fcps.edu) or Coreen Pinkerton (ckpinkerton@fcps.edu).

AAP Information & Referrals

With next week being a short week, we will continue to focus on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is the quality of expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion, because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness, and optimism. And, the great thing about gratitude is that it can be intentionally cultivated. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets -- and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

To practice and encourage the character strength of gratitude with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Change in Transportation Protocol

If playdates are planned, the Shrevewood office team must receive notifications from the parents of all students involved.  Playdate notifications may be made via the online Change in Transportation Form or via an email sent to SWESOffice@fcps.edu. For any changes in transportation, please make sure to contact the office no later 3:00 pm.

Procedures when you come to join your children for lunch:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.
