Gift Card Collection for Teachers and Staff
The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season.
Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff on Monday, December 11th. Parents, families, and students are invited to send in donated gift cards to the main office addressed to Alexa Pugnetti. If you would prefer to donate a gift item, instead of gift cards, that would also be accepted and appreciated.
We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Wednesday, December 6th. Please contact Alexa Pugnetti at alpugnetti@fcps.edu for more information.
Help Support our Families in Need During the Holidays
There are many families in our Woodson community struggling with hunger and food insecurity this year. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have been able to provide snacks for students in need during the school day and gift cards for meals during the holiday breaks. In close coordination with school counselors, we are asking the parent community for help with two efforts: donations and/or gifts cards for families in need this holiday season, and help stocking the Cav Cupboard. Please find more information below including easy links to donate directly or to purchase needed items via our Amazon wishlist. Thank you!
We are collecting donations between now and Friday, December 8th and there are three ways you can help:
- Purchase and drop off gifts cards to local grocery stores (Safeway, Giant, Walmart, Target) in amounts ranging from $10 to $25 and drop them off in the front office (please give to Gina D’Angelo or Jackie O’Brien)
- Help stock the Cav Cupboard (student and family pantry) using the Amazon wishlist link below.
The Cav Cupboard will provide food and other household needs to our students and families in need and will be managed by the school counselors in a discreet and respectful way. Click here to visit the Cav Cupboard Amazon Wishlist – all items that you purchase will be delivered directly to Woodson High School and directed to the Cav Cupboard.
Please consider helping with this important effort as we enter the Holiday season.

Are you interested in a summer study abroad in high school? The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has international programs for language and culture, STEM, social change and arts and culture in 35 different countries around the world.
Students are invited to choose 3-4 week-long experiential learning programs that run in over 30 study centers worldwide in Summer 2024! Volleyball
Congratulations to our Varsity Volleyball team who remained undefeated in the region and claimed the Occoquan Region Champion title last week!
Cross Country
Congrats to our Girls Cross Country Team who placed 3rd and Jibran Hutchins who was 6th in boys individuals Great Job Everyone!
Varsity Field Hockey
The Cavaliers traveled to Virginia Beach to play the undefeated Oakton Cougars in the state semifinal on Friday. As the Oakton parents were discussing their weekend beach reservations, the Cavaliers’ Amanda Lee scored a goal on a penalty corner. Ten minutes later, Julia Oleyar rifled a pass to Siena Niedrick who shot it into the goal. Woodson led 2-0 at the half. Oakton responded in the third quarter with a goal, but the state’s best defender-midfielder combination of Reese Cuviello and Julia Oleyar spearheaded a gamelong blunting of the potent Oakton offense, supported by Kelby Lennen’s disruption of multiple Oakton penalty corners and the stellar goaltending of AJ Ingson to preserve the 2-1 upset victory.
The Cavaliers played in the state championship on Saturday against Yorktown, losing a thrilling game in double overtime, 1-0. Goaltender AJ Ingson was magical and the defense of Ella Mathias, Kelby Lennen, and Ava Durosko withstood numerous attacks and benefitted from key blocks from Arin Lee and Grace Hartley. Reese Cuviello and Julia Oleyar again set up and launched the Cavalier counterattack and pushed as hard as they could, but in the second overtime, after 60 minutes of regulation and 16:55 of overtime, with laboring lungs and legs, the Cavaliers’ magical season ended abruptly when a Yorktown stick directed the ball to the back of the Woodson goal.
Ice Hockey Club
The Woodson Ice Hockey Club defeated Bishop Ireton 5 to 2 on Thursday, November 9th, to move into a tie for first place in the North Division of the Capitals Scholastic Hockey League (CSHL). The team dominated play, doubling Bishop Ireton in shots on goal: 33 to 16. Senior, Henry Persky netted two goals, while freshman, Wyatt Borgeson scored his first high school goal. Carson Edington and Derek Hanson anchored the defense. Other scorers included Aiden Cheong (TJ) and Eli Fugate (Robinson).
The next varsity game is on Friday night, November 17th, against Hayfield/South County at the St. James Ice Rink, which is located at 6805 Industrial Road, Springfield, VA. Puck drop is at 9:00 pm. As always, there is no cost to attend, so come out and support the team and watch some exciting hockey!
The Junior Varsity team was also in action last week, with a game against West Springfield on November 6th. The team lost 8 to 2, but played very hard with a short bench due to several players not being able to make the game. Wyatt Borgeson scored a goal and Krissi Lundblad picked up an assist. The JV team’s next game is also on Friday night at the St. James when they take on Washington Liberty. Puck drop is at 9:40 pm.

Attendance
Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.
If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office.
Parents/guardians must contact the attendance office (703-503-4800) to report attendance; emails and online forms will no longer be accepted to notify our school of your student’s absence. Woodson is not monitoring or accepting any absences submitted via email. Due to an excessive number of forgeries, the online attendance form is currently disabled.
Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.
From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:
Congressional Art Competition
Though this event will not take place until Spring of 2024, I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention as well. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.
I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio. Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.
The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.
Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
