Dear Lancers:
Saturday was Veterans Day. A day where it is our privilege to say “thank you” to all of America’s veterans, to let them know that we appreciate them for their service and to honor them for their sacrifices. I would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of our military connected families at Longfellow.
I especially want to thank those staff members and family of staff members who served in our Armed Forces:
Tom Grady - US Army Desmond Reid - US Air Force Arthur Samson - US Army Matt McElroy’s Family: Howard McElroy, TR McElroy, R. Adm. John McElroy Kimberly Dawson’s Father and Brother: Maj. Richard Lewis, US Air Force; SFC David Lewis, US Army Joann Leme’s Husband: Capt. Luis Leme, US Navy Susan Boomer’s Father: Gen. Walter Boomer, USMC Lisa Hoyle’s Father: Michael Hedge, US Army Ellen Metcalfe’s Husband: Capt. Robert Metcalfe, US Navy
The celebration of Veteran’s Day started on June 28, 1919, when World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, or truce, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
When Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled Banner” over 200 years ago, he called America, “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Those words are as true today as they were then.
Throughout this Nation’s history, America’s Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have bravely answered the call to defend our freedom, to aid our friends and allies, and to turn back aggressors.
We can never fully repay our debt of gratitude to the American service members who have sacrificed and served for this country. We can, however, recognize and thank the millions of veterans still living today, including the staff members and their families who are honored in the slideshow below.
Have a great rest of the week!
-Jim

Longfellow Love
At Longfellow Middle School we have approximately 150 students who live at, or below, the poverty level. Their families welcome our help with expenses such as school supplies and holiday meals. Longfellow Love is a student assistance program that supports Longfellow students in need through donations from families like you, as well as contributions from local businesses. The contributions and gift cards are then anonymously distributed directly to the families in need through the counseling system. In years past, we have only supported families during the holiday season, however, with the rising cost of food, we would like to provide gift cards to families for Thanksgiving as well as the holidays. This year, our fellow student families need our help more than ever! Click HERE to sign up to donate gift cards from Lidl and Walmart to Longfellow families who need our help during the upcoming season!
There are three ways you can purchase gift cards: 1. Go to Lidl and/or Walmart and purchase gift cards in person. Drop them off at the front office in an envelope addressed to Juanita Baptiste. 2. Go online to Walmart eGift Card, choose your amount, purchase an ecard, and email it to Juanita at jbaptiste@fcps.edu 3. Go online to Walmart Gift Card to mail, choose your amount, and mail or drop it off to Juanita Baptiste at Longfellow Middle School.
Donated Gift Cards can be mailed, dropped off, or emailed to: Juanita Baptiste Longfellow Middle School 2000 Westmoreland Street Falls Church, VA 22043 jbaptiste@fcps.edu
Gift cards for Thanksgiving are needed by Wednesday, November 15th, and holiday cards are needed by Monday, December 11th!! Let's show our Lancer family some LOVE this holiday season! Thank you for your support!
