Great job Raising the Ram!
A Note from the Principal
Dear Rocky Run Families-
Turkey Day is rapidly approaching and I could not be more thankful to be part of the Rocky Run community. In keeping with the theme of gratitude and thankfulness that is inherent to the month of November, I want to take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate our amazing staff at RRMS! The Ram staff continuously shows resilience, compassion, grace, and innovation. I am truly lucky to work with such a dedicated group of educators.
I am also grateful for each and every student in the Ram community. Our students continue to amaze me in and out of the classroom as engaged, global-minded collaborators.
Finally, I am thankful for the continued support of the community. The partnership built on trust and communication enables the students and staff and to focus on academic inquiry.
Over the Thanksgiving break, I encourage students and staff to remember to take a break from work, and spend time with family, friends and loved ones! Personally, I will be staying local and hosting dinner for 21 people! I am grateful that FCPS gave me off on Wednesday so I can cook and clean.
Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Peter Kownacki Principal Rocky Run Middle School @pakownacki
Reminder: Window for Full-time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2023
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time (Level IV) Referral Form to Anna Slevin, agslevin@fcps.edu, no later than December 15, 2023.
The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for full-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Anna Slevin at agslevin@fcps.edu.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
 Congrats to Mrs. Grover!
Our librarian, Mrs. Grover, was recently named the Virginia School Librarian of the Year! She was presented with this prestigious award at the annual conference of the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL). At Rocky Run, Mrs. Grover creates an active, welcoming library space that promotes student voice as well as personal and academic growth, collaborating with more than 30 teachers each year, curating a diverse book collection on the library shelves, and sponsoring several after school clubs. She also runs the Rocky Run makerspace, the Inspiration Studio, which is used during Rock Time, after school, and with many classes. Professionally, Mrs. Grover serves on the Rocky Run Equity Committee and the Instructional Leadership Council. Outside of Rocky Run, Mrs. Grover has been a member of VAASL since 2014 and serves as an adjunct professor for ODU supervising school librarian student teachers while mentoring new librarians for FCPS. She has had numerous articles published in library journals, including School Library Connection, Knowledge Quest, and the Virginia School Library Association, and has been a guest on librarian podcasts, including School Librarians United. Recently, Mrs. Grover presented well-attended sessions at the state and national library conferences. Congratulations Ms. Rachel Grover, on being named Virginia’s School Librarian of the Year for 2023! We are so lucky to have you on the Rocky Run staff!
