A Message From The Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

It’s been a busy week here at Ravensworth.  We’ve enjoyed seeing many of our families at teacher conferences, Family Curriculum Night, and the Bravery Breakfast.  We appreciate your continued partnership and support of your children. Thanks to our teachers and staff who have worked countless hours planning and preparing for these events.

On Thursday, November 16th, the Ravensworth PTA will be hosting our Run for Ravensworth event.  You are welcome to come watch your child run at their assigned time.  Here is the schedule for the run:

9:00 - 9:45 am – 4th and 6th grades

10:15 – 11:15 am – 3rd and 5th grades

11:30 am – 12:30 pm – Kindergarten

12:45 – 1:45 pm – 1st and 2nd grades

This is our PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year.  Boosterthon is organizing this fundraiser.  Please have your student log onto mybooster.com to donate and learn more about this year's character program and how to earn rewards for sharing and donating.  We hope you will consider sharing our Run for Ravensworth Boosterthon information with family and friends.  The money raised supports our STEAM program, field trip buses, and teacher classroom grants.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Family Life Education

FLE

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations.

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. (Parent/Guardian Access to FLE Materials in Schoology)
  • City of Fairfax Regional Library – lessons only.  Media is not available.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s beginning of the year folder or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify Mrs. Heiman assistant principal, in writing before instruction begins.

You are invited to learn more about the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program.  The meeting will be held on Monday, November 13th at 5:45 p.m. in the Ravensworth Library. Program materials and media will be available for your review at this time.  Please rsvp at https://forms.gle/yN4vFS9Ym4udYEdU8 by Friday, November 10th if you plan to attend.

Kiss and Ride Reminders

drop off2

We recently have noticed more families dropping off their children in the Kiss and Ride loop.  To ensure the safety of your child and others, please drop your child off between 8:20- 8:35 am.  Those students who arrive after 8:35 am must be walked into the building by the adult bringing them.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Reminder:  Window for Full-time AAP Referrals Closes Soon

aap

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time (Level IV) Referral Form to Andrea Trumbull, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher at astrumbull@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2023

The window for families to submit a referral for full-time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Andrea Trumbull at astrumbull@fcps.edu.

Referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific AAP or part-time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for full-time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Positivity Project

Gratitude

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is the quality of feelings and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Music Notes

music notes

Hello from Music!  General Music classes have finished all things pumpkins (5 little pumpkins, 5 perfect pumpkins, Pass the Pumpkin game).  We sang songs, played xylophones, and used rhythm sticks to read quarter and eighth notes.

We now turn our attention to fall songs and Veterans’ Day. Older students will learn how to play the Round Robin Rondo on the xylophones and learning about the form of a Rondo.  We continue to review note names and are excited to announce Ravens in grades 3-6 will be playing recorders starting in January. More information to come!

The 5th and 6th grade Ravensworth Chorus is busy practicing for their winter concert on Thursday, December 14th at 6PM. In addition, singers have been invited to participate in the LBSS Pyramid Chorus Concert on November 28 (with a practice on November 27th).  Make sure students return interest forms for this event! Ask Ms. Blend or Ms. Dutko if you need another form.

When a Student Should Stay Home from School

Stay home when sick

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss. Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home. If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent. Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

PTA is Seeking a New Treasurer

join pta2

The PTA is looking for someone willing to assume the role of Treasurer for the 2023-2024 school year. Unfortunately, our current Treasurer, Lane, is unable to continue in the position. While we will miss her in that role, it opens a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to get involved. The position includes:

  • Tracking and inputting incomes and expenses to QuickBooks
  • Creating Monthly Budget Reports and presenting them at Meetings
  • Writing checks and depositing payments received
  • Attending monthly meetings

The position demands anywhere between 2-5 hours of work per month. While an accounting background and QuickBooks experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

Anyone interested in the role can send an email to president@ravensworthpta.org. Further questions about the role may be sent to selemefamilia@gmail.org
