Fourth graders explore Jamestown

Dear Haycock Families,

We hope all our families that celebrate had a happy Dawali yesterday.

Last week, although only three days with students, was action packed!

On Wednesday, our fifth graders left for an overnight trip to Camp Highroad. It was a great time for community building and for being in the beautiful and beneficial outdoors. Many thanks to all the parents who served as chaperones and to the fifth grade teachers who planned and prepared for weeks to make this field trip a memorable one for all our fifth graders.

Our second graders put on a great and moving tribute to our veterans and those serving in the military on Friday morning.  Please see the second grade Veteran's Day performance here.

Also on Friday, our fourth graders had a great field trip to Jamestown and Yorktown.  The docents were amazed by our students's knowledge of this period of our history.  Kudos to the fourth grade teachers for preparing our students so well.

We are honoring our cafeteria staff this week.  They work hard every day to prepare healthy meals for our students and serve them with kindness and a smile.

This coming week, we look forward to a virtual Family Life Education Parent Preview Night, the PTA STEAM Night, and to the Kindergarten Feast on Friday.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP  HABoyd@fcps.edu

Jody Delaney, AP  jmdelaney@fcps.edu

Diwali

We hope all who celebrate had a wonderful Diwali. Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This year's Diwali artwork was created by Chantilly High School student Rijuta D. as part of the FCPS Observance Design Challenge for Students.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day- November 14

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is Tuesday, November 14th.  Please consider walking to school or walking as a family in your neighborhood before or after school to honor Ruby Bridges (no prizes will be given).  Ruby Bridges is an American civil rights activist.  She was the first African American child to attend a formerly whites only school in Louisiana during the school desegregation time frame.

November is Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
