A Message From Mrs. Burke
Happy Friday, Edison High School Community!
This month is Family Engagement Month, and it reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success. FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth. Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development. Please remember that we want to hear from you about your experience at Edison High School. Please provide feedback here.
We are lucky to have so many great staff working at Edison HS. Please take the time to nominate a staff member who has impacted your child or your family, for an outstanding employee award. You can nominate a staff member via this Nomination Form. Nominations are due by November 16th.
This week was National School Psychology Week, and we celebrate the important work school psychologists do to help all students thrive. Kayla Callister is the psychologist for Edison HS, and we appreciate all of the work she does for our students and families!
Last night, we honored our students who received a 3.75 or higher last year, and they received either an academic letter for their first time or an academic pin for additional years. We also honored our National Merit Commended Scholars, Brian Like, Isaac Rodgers, and Yuki Yu who were among the top 50,000 students nationwide based on 2022 PSAT scores.
Tomorrow is Veterans Day and provides a great reason to pause, reflect, and recognize the extraordinary sacrifices our Veterans and their families have made on our behalf, and we thank them for their service. Today, I was honored to spend the morning with our military families, sharing connections and asking about our school. We have 168 military-connected families at Edison and many staff that are military-connected. Thank you to our Edison Ambassadors for hosting the event and to our JROTC cadets for sharing their stories.
Our football team will play in the first round of regional playoffs since 2008 tonight! We are very proud of the work they have put in this season and can not wait to cheer them on tonight! LETS GO EAGLES!
Amanda Burke Principal

8.💲 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Opening in December
The FAFSA is needed to determine a student's eligibility for financial aid. Families of current seniors should be thinking about completing financial aid applications in order for students to be eligible to receive financial help to cover the costs of post-secondary education. With the late opening of the FAFSA, there are some things families can do now (English only).
A funding opportunity is available for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA — the Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) program. Find out which aid option is right for your family on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.
9. Reminder: Checking Out Students Early from School
We are not staffed this year to manage unscheduled student check-outs. Please follow the guidelines for “day of” checkouts on our website. Plan for appointments and contact the office in advance. If you forget or cannot contact the office in advance, please understand that it will take us time to bring your child to the office, and we appreciate your patience.

All early dismissals need to be submitted by 10:00 AM in order to be processed in time. For unplanned early check-outs, parents will need to come into the main office with their picture ID. As noted above, it can take up to 30 minutes to retrieve your student.
