No School Monday and Tuesday - Teacher Workdays

Oak View reminds all families that Monday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 7 are teacher workdays. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Wednesday, November 8.

Field Day Fun!

Oak View was delighted to host our Fall Field Day on the final Friday in October! The weather could not have been more spectacular and the large contingency of parent volunteers made it a wonderful experience for all.  We thank our Field Day organizers, Mr. Hutzel and Mr. Corey for overseeing all aspects of the day. There were new games and perennial favorites that were enjoyed by all students in Grades K-6. We look forward to next year!

George Mason Men's Volleyball Team Adopts Oak View

Oak View has been adopted and we could not be happier with our new extended family, the Men's Volleyball Team at George Mason University! We have already learned we have a lot in common 1) We both have a mascot (Ernest the Eagle and Gunston the Patriot) 2) We both have Green and Gold for school colors 3) We both LOVE the Oak View Playground! In conjunction with Field Day, we were introduced to the Men's Volleyball Players of George Mason University. They come from all over the United States and Puerto Rico. They range in height size from 6' to 6'10"! While dwarfing the school admin team, our smiles could not be greater and we look forward to collaborations throughout the school year! The GMU players will visit Oak View on a more regular schedule and connect with students in classrooms and the cafeteria. Oak View families will also be invited to GMU Athletic Events, like the ones coming up on the workdays! We thank our parent volunteer partner, Mrs. Yergin-Doniger and our school staff volunteers, Mrs. Andray and Mrs. Williamson for bringing this amazing opportunity to Oak View!

Fall Fest Success!

Oak View PTA held a spectacular Fall Fest the last weekend of October! The weather was perfect and the trunk or treat volunteers created a fun and festive atmosphere for all attendees! Our Oak View Eagles were barely recognizable in their costumes and face paint. Our amazing PTA volunteers put on a fantastic event for the entire Oak View community. The students were still a buzz about it over this past week. Thank you to all volunteer coordinators and parent volunteers for coming together and creating fun memories for our kids at school!

Important Laptop Care Reminders

We have recently noticed an increase in broken laptops at school. We are seeing students dropping laptops, banging on keys, and even losing laptops. We’d like to ask for your help in reminding students that school laptops need to be treated with care and respect. Our school laptops are valuable and expensive educational tools that help support our learning here at Oak View. We thank you for your support in instilling a sense of responsibility in our students.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms. Please be sure to return paper forms by Friday, November 17. The electronic form will continue to be available in SIS ParentVUE until January 2024.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. National Family Engagement Month & Oak View Family Supports

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

Oak View has recently hired a wonderful family liaison and we are pleased to introduce Ms. Francheska Dishmey! Ms. Dishmey is looking forward to becoming a part of our school, meeting our staff members, and working with our students. We are fortunate that she is bi-lingual (speaking English and Spanish) and is excited to bring her many talents to Oak View. She can be contacted via email and looks forward to connecting with you soon!

Oak View is also pleased to introduce our new social worker, Ms. Kathy Somadelis! Ms. Somadelis has been a social worker for the FCPS system a long time. She is retired but continues to support various schools, to include covering three schools last school year. Ms. Somadelis has worked for the county in family preservation program and a brief time in foster care. She can be contacted via email and looks forward to connecting with you soon!

Successfully Completing Algebra 1 by Eighth Grade

Helping students to complete Algebra 1 by eighth grade is part of our Strategic Plan (Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence). Algebra Access Network Improvement Community (AANIC) is working to increase the diverse representation of students who take advanced math classes and succeed in them. This video shares more about the AANIC cohorts at Kilmer and Key middle schools and lets students explain why Algebra matters to them.

Passing Algebra 1 earlier allows for students to take more advanced classes like Dual Enrollment courses, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These advanced courses help students succeed in college. A recent study from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) found that completing Algebra 1 by grade eight led to 30% more ninth graders and 16% more 11th graders taking advanced courses.

School Bonds on Ballot November 7

🏗️ How School Building Projects are Selected

Each year, the Fairfax County School Board and FCPS staff members work with the community to develop an updated five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for school building and renovation projects. To develop the CIP, the school system assesses changes in expected enrollments, academic programs, and facility conditions to determine priorities for new construction, renovations, and other capital facility projects. The School Board then evaluates the affordability of these school needs against other countywide requirements to determine the bond proposal.

The School Board is committed to protecting the community’s investment in schools and other buildings, which have a combined present value approaching $6.5 billion. Not only do these facilities wear out over time, but they also become outdated, both technologically and instructionally. FCPS renovates its schools to ensure that students countywide have effective and efficient learning environments.

The 2023 Bond Referendum will be on the ballot Tuesday. Vote on Tuesday, November 7. Learn more about registering to vote.
