 On Friday during school wide Morning Meeting, all students at Bucknell Elementary were surprised with new shoes!
Dear Bucknell Families,
What a week at Bucknell! One of our greatest joys at Bucknell is ensuring that we build community as a classroom, school, and even amongst the Bucknell school staff. Each day our students have Morning Meeting in their classrooms to build community and check in on students’ social emotional state before starting the school day. Monthly, our teachers have Morning Meeting before school to build our staff relationships. This Friday we had an opportunity to have a school wide Morning Meeting to build our school community. Our students were surprised by a generous donor, with support from a not-for-profit called Shoes That Fit, who donated new sneakers to every student who attends Bucknell Elementary School! The excitement that filled the air was truly something special. We’re grateful for the donors and Shoes that Fit for this opportunity for all our students. Your children can look forward to us continuing the school wide Morning Meetings quarterly throughout the school year.
While school wide Morning Meetings will begin taking place quarterly, we have a new daily addition to our instructional schedule as well. We have implemented Bulldog Time this year to ensure each student gets what they need. This is a 30-minute block during the day where each student receives personalized instructional support from an adult in the building. Through these targeted supports, we are empowering every student to thrive and grow! We’re excited about our students’ success!
We truly hope that you have an amazing weekend. Our staff will be hard at work this Monday and Tuesday to close out the first quarter. Please enjoy the extra time with your children and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Wednesday, November 8th.

Family Engagement Month
Family Engagement Month is an annual observance celebrated throughout November to highlight the importance of family involvement in education and other aspects of life. During this month, schools, community organizations, and families come together to promote strong partnerships and meaningful connections between parents, caregivers, and educators. The goal is to enhance children's academic and social development by fostering open communication, active participation, and collaboration within the family unit and the broader community. Family Engagement Month encourages families to play an active role in their children's learning and well-being, ultimately contributing to stronger, more supportive, and thriving family bonds.

Impact Aid Forms - Submit Virtually at www.fcps.edu/impact
The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.
The surveys will be available online this year. Please log into ParentVue from October 16 to October 30. Once logged in, please select the “Online Packets” tab at the top, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” from the drop down menu.
Any surveys not completed by October 31 will be sent home in Friday Folders on November 3. Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their teacher no later than Thursday, November 16th.

SR&R Virtual Feedback Session
Please join FCPS’ Chief Equity Office for a virtual meeting regarding the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Regulation. The event will be held on Thursday, November 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. You may register at this link.
Your feedback will help ensure that FCPS policies align with the school division’s mission and values. It will also help identify any specific considerations that need to be addressed for the 2024-25 school year.
Language interpretation will be available in Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. A Certified Deaf Interpreter will be available as well. Get information on the SR&R.

School Bond Referendum
The 2023 School Bond Referendum will be on the ballot Tuesday, November 7. Remember to vote!
November 7 will also be a teacher workday and a holiday for students. For more information on voting, visit the Virginia Department of Elections website.

Strategic Plan
 Helping students to complete Algebra 1 by eighth grade is part of our Strategic Plan (Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence). Algebra Access Network Improvement Community (AANIC) is working to increase the diverse representation of students who take advanced math classes and succeed in them. This video shares more about the AANIC cohorts at Kilmer and Key middle schools and lets students explain why Algebra matters to them.
Passing Algebra 1 earlier allows for students to take more advanced classes like Dual Enrollment courses, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These advanced courses help students succeed in college. A recent study from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) found that completing Algebra 1 by grade eight led to 30% more ninth graders and 16% more 11th graders taking advanced courses.

National Family Engagement Month
This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.
FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.
If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives.

 Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans.
