Principal's Message

ww

Dear Shrevewood Families,

As we approach Veterans Day tomorrow, we want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to the brave individuals who have served and continue to serve our country. Veterans Day is a time to honor the sacrifices made by these heroes and to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of their dedication and courage. To our Shrevewood families who have veterans among them, we extend a heartfelt thank you for the sacrifices you and your loved ones have made.

This week is National School Psychologists Week. Thank you to our amazing school psychologist, Betty Zemichael, for all she does to support our students and families.

The 2nd quarter is off to a very strong start and we are looking forward to a full week of school with our students next week!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

outstanding

Each year FCPS strives to recognize outstanding staff throughout the county. This is an opportunity to recognize staff in any and all capacities. Both staff and community members can nominate Shrevewood Staff. You do not need to nominate for all categories. To submit a nomination for a Shrevewood Outstanding Employee please complete your nomination through this Google Form by November 17. You may nominate an employee in one or more categories. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category listed in the form.

If you have any questions, contact Kimberly Adams (kmadams@fcps.edu) or Coreen Pinkerton (ckpinkerton@fcps.edu).

Picture Retakes - November 13th

If your student was absent or if you purchased an original photo day package and want a retake, your student can retake their photo on Monday, November 13th. Impact Aid

The Impact Aid programs and grants are designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students.

The survey will be made available to FCPS families online through Parent Vue beginning October 16, 2023.

After that, families who have not completed the survey will have a printed copy sent home with each child after October 31st and due back by November 17, 2023.

If you are in need of a Parent Vue account, please reach out to Sebastian Brennan, snbrennan@fcps.edu.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is the quality of feelings and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. And, the great thing about gratitude is that it can be intentionally cultivated. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets -- and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

To practice and encourage the character strength of gratitude with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.
