Message from Ms. Kearns
Hello Bruin Families!
Today marks the end of the first quarter and the start of a long weekend for students. We hope they have a chance to relax and recharge before the start of the second quarter next Wednesday.
I want to congratulate our High School Marching Band on their Superior rating at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association competition on October 21. Also, congratulations to our Boys Cross Country team on their first place Region title and their advancement to the state competition November 11, along with Claire Aponte who qualified as an individual from our Girls Cross Country team.
Go Bruins!
Lindsey Kearns

Report Cards and ParentVue
This year, report cards will be accessible in SIS ParentVUE. At the end of each quarter, a PDF document of the Report Card will be posted in SIS. The Report Card tab in ParentVUE provides the student’s marks for each grading period of the current school year.
If you have yet to set up your ParentVUE account, please reach out to Angela Santizo (assantizo@fcps.edu), Middle School Student Services Assistant, or Sandy Coleman (smcoleman@fcps.edu), High School Student Information Assistant, respectively to request your activation code. You may also submit a Parent Support Request online.
News from SGA
The Fall Blood Drive is on November 14th in the gym. We have a goal of 100 donations for this drive, so we need your help! Students will sign up during high school lunches.
Family Engagement Month
This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.
FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.
If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives.

9th Grade Signs of Suicide Program
This school year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.
Through the program, students learn:
- that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
- how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
- to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
- who they can turn to at school for help
The week of November 27-December 1, through Advisory/WIN time, 9th grade students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.
