What an exciting way to end the first quarter. The George Mason University softball team joined us for a fun-filled pep rally! Students cheered for their teachers and the Mason student-athletes as they introduced themselves and competed in some friendly activities. Our gym was filled with enthusiasm and smiles as we kicked off the start of our partnership with the A10 Champions! We even had our Little Run Roadrunner and the Mason Patriot in the house! Go, Little Run, and go, Mason!

Welcome to Little Run, Mr. Griffin!

Photo of Long Term Substitute, Mr. Griffin

We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Jermain Griffin to our Little Run family. Mr. Griffin currently serves as a long-term sub in 6th grade, and we are so grateful to have him here! Before joining FCPS, Mr. Griffin spent nearly 15 years working in higher education as an academic advisor, lecturer, and researcher, among other duties. Before serving in higher education, he lived abroad in El Salvador as a Peace Corps volunteer and in Sudan as a humanitarian aid worker. As a Queens, New York native, he loves the New York Mets and New York Knicks and sympathizes for New York Jets fans while rooting for the San Francisco 49ers (since 1982!). Mr. Griffin is very happy to be part of the Little Run ES community as a long-term substitute teacher!

Positivity Project at Little Run ES

Positivity Project Green Shield Logo

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Bravery. Bravery means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary.

Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgement; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.

Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. For example, some people with social anxiety are brave just by leaving their house and talking with people. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears, such as swimming or playing a sport. And, on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.

To practice and encourage the character strength of bravery with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Please be sure to return paper forms by Friday, November 17. The electronic form will continue to be available in SIS ParentVUE until January 2024.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Successfully Completing Algebra 1 by Eighth Grade

Photo of Student writing on the whiteboard

Helping students to complete Algebra 1 by eighth grade is part of our Strategic Plan (Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence). Algebra Access Network Improvement Community (AANIC) is working to increase the diverse representation of students who take advanced math classes and succeed in them. This video shares more about the AANIC cohorts at Kilmer and Key middle schools and lets students explain why Algebra matters to them.

Passing Algebra 1 earlier allows for students to take more advanced classes like Dual Enrollment courses, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These advanced courses help students succeed in college. A recent study from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) found that completing Algebra 1 by grade eight led to 30% more ninth graders and 16% more 11th graders taking advanced courses.
