Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

The Runathon Kick-Off took place last Friday.  Students and staff enjoyed watching the video which highlighted our Roadrunner training for the Runathon.  We hope you will watch the video with your children and join in on the excitement!  We encourage families to participate in the Runathon by training together, raising money together or simply cheering each other on.  Runathon packets were sent home with students.  Please remind your children to turn in their envelopes whether they raised money or not; all students who return the envelope  will be included in a raffle!  Students will be running by grade and the schedule is below.  We hope you can join us on November 10th for the big event!

  • Grades K, 2 - 10:00 am-11:00 am
  • Grades 4, 5, 6 - 11:15 am-12:15 pm
  • Grades 1, 3 - 1:45 pm-2:45 pm

We would like to recognize our veterans at the beginning of each run.  If you are a veteran and plan to attend the Runathon, please email Karlen McClain at ksmcclain@fcps.edu to let her know which run you will be attending.

This week we are discussing ways we can have an “Other People Mindset”.  It is not always easy to put the needs of others before our own needs.  Please join us in brainstorming with your Roadrunners about creative ways to care for others in this way.

Our 1st quarter ends this Friday, November 3rd and students will be dismissed 2 hours early.  There will be no school for students on November 6th and 7th while staff are involved in school planning and holding parent conferences.

This is a reminder that we do not celebrate Halloween at school and students are not permitted to wear costumes.  We encourage students to keep candy at home after Halloween.

Much peace.

PTA Update

Help support Marshall Road’s students and staff members by supporting the 13th Annual Runathon!

The 13th Annual Runathon is coming up on Friday, November 10th.  Students, teachers, and parents/caregivers will be running laps during the school day to earn money for our school!  This is our ONE main fundraiser of the year and money raised supports the PTA’s programs throughout the year, including community events (like our Family Picnics, Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast, International Night, STEAM Night, and Ice Cream Social), author visits, classroom grants, teacher appreciation, and much more!  100% of donations go directly to our school!  Please visit our Runathon website to create a personal fundraising page for your student, make a donation, view the class leaderboards and learn more about prizes!

We hope you can come out and join us on November. 10th.  You can sign up here to volunteer (all volunteers will receive a free Runathon t-shirt!), or you can come run with your student or simply cheer them on as they complete their laps.  It’s a fun day for the whole school community.

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day / Decorate your Bike!

Join us on the Bike Train or walk to school on our next Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day tomorrow!  For this Bike Train, we invite everyone to decorate their bikes!  (Note: No costumes.  Only bike decorations.) See here for some ideas.

The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am. Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route.  If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides!

If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park).  If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home (email jfheflin@fcps.edu).  Riders must have a helmet and be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike on neighborhoods roads.  Please visit our Bike Train page for additional details or use this link to join the Bike Train parents group.

Fall Collection: Compost Pumpkins; Donate Straw Bales, Gourds, or Potted Mums; Recycle Candy Wrappers!

Let us take your autumn items off your hands, so you can prep for the next season! Flyer

  • Pumpkins: The PTA will collect pumpkins for composting on Friday, November 3.  From 8:30-9:30 am come through the kiss n’ ride lot and we’ll take it from your car.  During school hours, bring pumpkins to the compost bins outside the front entrance. Before you drop them off, please remove all decorations, such as paint, glitter, and candle wax as these materials cannot be composted.
  • Potted Mums: Drop off near the bench in front of school any day.  Students can plant them in the gardens.
  • Straw bales: Drop off near the bench in front of school any day.  These will be used in the gardens.
  • Gourds: Drop off near the bench in front of school any day.  Students will examine their seeds.
  • Plastic Candy Wrappers: Bring your candy wrappers to school and place them in the Trash or Treasure box in the lobby November 1-17.  The PTA will send them to be recycled.  Please only plastic candy wrappers (no cardboard; and no plastic baggies).  To learn more about how wrappers will be recycled, watch this video

Sign up to Contribute to the Teacher & Staff Thanksgiving Luncheon

On Monday, November 20th, Marshall Road teachers and staff will enjoy their annual Thanksgiving Luncheon.  Please help us show how thankful we are for them by signing up to donate an item to this special lunch or to help decorate.  The PTA will provide turkey for the meal and MRES staff will bring sides to share with one another.

We will be serving approximately 125 teachers and staff. Contributions can be dropped off in the lobby from 8:15-10:30 am on Monday, November 20.  The Luncheon will start promptly at 11:00 am, so it's important that items arrive on time.

Seeking PTA Play Coordinator

Each spring we offer 5th and 6th grade students an opportunity to participate in a theater enrichment class where they can learn about theater and be part of a live production.

We are excited that MRES Alumni Ashton Schaffer will be returning as our director again this year.  Planning is already underway!  This year, we are hoping to hold registration and a few interest sessions in early December, and then hold auditions in early January.  Practices will then be held in the morning before school and students will typically perform for the school community and families before spring break.

Before we can progress any further, we need to find a PTA Play Coordinator!  The PTA Play Coordinator will serve as the liaison between the Director, school, PTA Board, & families; help with communications to families; and coordinate registration, cast member t-shirts, the post play party, and other aspects of the play.

We could also use a volunteer(s) to assist with scenery/costumes, as well as technical aspects like lighting and sound.  If you have any interest or expertise in these areas of theatre, please consider volunteering!

Questions? Interested in getting involved?  Please reach out to Monica at vicepresident@marshallroadpta.org.
