Fort Belvoir Primary School Weeks at a Glance 10/27/2023

Principal's Note

Fort Belvoir Primary Families,

We are continuing to spread joy and laughter throughout our school community!  Our first Book Character parade was a major success. We appreciate all of the families and friends that came to see this event. Seeing the smiles on the faces of students as they waved to families was touching to so many individuals.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid:

We are asking every family to complete the Federal Impact Aid form. It is imperative that we identify students attending our school that have a military connection. Prior data reflects that more than 90% of our students population have a military connection; however, as of today only 40 families have completed the form.

We use the funding from the Impact Aid to pay for additional teaching positions, instructional materials, and to fund our STEAM program. It will be challenging for the school to maintain existing programs without being able to fully fund them.

For questions regarding the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid, please call 703-329-7750 or email ImpactAid@fcps.edu or visit https://www.fcps.edu/impact.  Additional information about Impact Aid programs and grants is available on the U.S. Department of Education's website at DoED Impact Aid Programs.

Kindergarten Field Trip Recap:

Our young explorers had an incredible time during their first field trip to the Franconia Recreation Center. This unique experience allowed them to explore, learn, and create cherished memories. The children had the opportunity to engage in various activities that not only enhanced their knowledge but also fostered social interaction, teamwork, and fun.

Our outstanding staff and dedicated chaperones reported that our students demonstrated curiosity, enthusiasm, and exemplary behavior throughout the trip. We’re so proud of their ability to adapt and learn in a new environment, and we’re confident that this experience has contributed positively to their educational journey.

Fall Season Reminder:

As the fall season unfolds, we would like to encourage all families to ensure that their child is dressed appropriately for the changing weather conditions. While we understand that children are eager to participate in outdoor activities, such as recess, it’s essential to keep them warm and comfortable.

If your child is in need of a coat to stay warm during the colder months, please do not hesitate to reach out to our dedicated Family Liaison, Mrs. Dolores Elliott, via email at delliott@fcps.edu As a school family, we are here to support you and ensure that every child has the necessary resources to thrive in our learning environment.

Food Pantry Donation:

R

We extend our sincerest thanks to the members of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity, Inc. for their generous donation of food items for the Fort Belvoir Elementary Schools families. Their ongoing dedication to seeking opportunities to support our school and local community is truly remarkable. The kind gesture in providing food items demonstrates not only their generosity but also their compassion for the well-being of our students and their families. It is organizations like this one that make a significant impact on the lives of our students and their families, and we are truly grateful.

Red Ribbon Week at Primary:

Everyone at our school is thrilled to celebrate Red Ribbon Week, and grateful to the Army Substance Abuse Program for their contribution to this important initiative. The organization donated coloring books and other awareness materials. The materials provided aid with helping our students learn about the importance of making safe choices and avoiding substance abuse. Their commitment to raising awareness and educating our minds about these crucial issues is commandale and aligns with our school’s mission to promote a safe and healthy environment.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.

The surveys will be available online this year. Please log into ParentVue from October 16 to October 30.  Once logged in, please select the “Online Packets” tab at the top, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” from the drop down menu.

Any surveys not completed by October 31 will be sent home in Friday Folders on November 3. Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their teacher no later than Thursday, November 16th.

Advanced Academic Programs

In an effort to provide local access to full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services, our school is in the process of starting a Local Full-Time Program. Full-Time AAP (level IV) services will be available at Fort Belvoir Upper Elementary School in grade 3 beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. Full-Time AAP services will be expanded to grades 4-6 over the subsequent three school years. By the 2027-2028 school year, full-time AAP services will be available at our school in grades 3-6.

The Local Full-Time Program will allow center eligible students to stay at their neighborhood school and receive full-time services and will provide increased opportunities for students throughout the school to access AAP curriculum and resources.

A family information meeting will be held at Fort Belvoir Upper Elementary School in the Cafeteria on Tuesday, November 14th at 5:30pm. During this meeting, we will discuss the process for becoming a Local Full-Time AAP site, describe what this means for our school, and answer any questions.

We hope that you will be able to join us!
