Dear Marshall Road Families,
We hope you enjoyed the beautiful fall weather this weekend and all of the fun events that this time of year brings. Thank you to all who came out to help at the Fall Garden Clean-Up on Saturday. The landscaping around our school sign is a wonderful addition to the front of our school. A big thanks to our PTA and volunteers for making this such a successful event!
We are excited about the Book Character Pumpkin Patch (details below) taking place next week and encourage you to join in on the fun. We do not celebrate Halloween at school and students are not permitted to wear costumes at school. We encourage students to keep candy at home after Halloween.
The traffic light at Nutley St and Marshall Rd has been repaired and is working properly now. FCPS provides bus transportation to and from school to students who live across Nutley St. If you choose to walk to school, please make sure that you cross this busy intersection with your child.
We will hold our Runathon kick-off on Friday with a student pep rally where we will debut our Runathon video. We will share the video link with all of you prior to the Runathon so that you can enjoy the Roadrunner’s adventures training for the runathon. We hope everyone can participate in the Runathon, in any way that works for your family. Train together, raise money together or simply cheer each other on. We look forward to seeing many of you on November 10th for the big event!
- Grades K, 2 - 10:00 am-11:00 am
- Grades 4, 5, 6 - 11:15 am-12:15 pm
- Grades 1, 3 - 1:45 pm-2:45 pm
We would like to recognize our veterans at the beginning of each run. If you are a veteran and plan to attend the Runathon, please email Karlen McClain at ksmcclain@fcps.edu to let her know which run you will be attending.
Much peace.

Book Character Pumpkin Patch
Are you getting into all things fall?? Or maybe you are looking for something to help you feel festive?? If so, you might be interested in participating in Marshall Road’s first ever Book Character Pumpkin Patch! Starting on Monday, October 30th, we will be decorating the MRES Library with painted/decorated pumpkins representing some of our favorite books and book characters. This is an optional and just for fun activity that some of our teachers, staff, and students will be participating in. Families are welcome to decorate and paint a pumpkin at home too! If you would like to decorate a pumpkin at home, just be sure it represents a book or book character (google “Book Character Pumpkins'' for inspiration!). Please bring in your completed pumpkin AND either a printout of the book cover or the name of the book your pumpkin represents (written on a piece of paper is fine) between October 26-30. Pumpkins can be dropped off in the main office or in the Library. Contact Librarian, Lisa Hoffman, with any questions/concerns: lahoffman@fcps.edu.
Digital Citizenship Week
Marshall Road will recognize Digital Citizenship the Week October 30-November 3. Teachers will be teaching lessons on this important skill set and students are encouraged to participate in the Spirit Week. Details can be found in this flyer in English and Spanish.

Marshall Road’s 13th Annual Runathon Kick Off
The PTA is excited to host Marshall Road’s 13th Annual Runathon on Friday, November 10th. This Friday we will kick-off our event—students will come home with their Runathon envelopes and our Runathon website will go live. We hope you will consider making a donation. This is our ONE main fundraiser of the year and money raised supports the PTA’s programs throughout the year, including community events (like our Family Picnics, Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast, International Night, STEAM Night, and Ice Cream Social), author visits, classroom grants, teacher appreciation, and much more! We also hope you will come out and join us on November 10th. You can sign up here to volunteer (all volunteers will receive a free Runathon t-shirt!), or you can come run with your student or simply cheer them on as they complete their laps. It’s a fun day for the whole school community.
Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day&Decorate your Bike!
Join us on the Bike Train or walk to school on our next Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on Tuesday, October 31! For this Bike Train, we invite everyone to decorate their bikes! (Note: No costumes. Only bike decorations.) See here for some ideas.
The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am. Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route. If you have a student joining the Bike Train, please consider signing up to chaperone some of the rides!
If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park). If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home (email jfheflin@fcps.edu). Riders must have a helmet and be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike on neighborhoods roads. Please visit our Bike Train page for additional details or use this link to join the Bike Train parents group.

Community Review of Elementary English Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources
Fairfax County Public Schools will adopt new Elementary School Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources for the 2024-2025 school year. A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers met in August to review the state-approved Cycle I materials. The committee will re-convene in January to review the state-approved Cycle II instructional materials under consideration. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new resources.
Elementary English Language Arts basal instructional resources may be accessed in person and online from November 15-December 15 at noon. Digital materials for public review and comment will be available on the Elementary Language Arts Basal Resource Review website. Those reviewing instructional materials may complete an electronic comment sheet that will be available on the website during the review period.
Hard copies of instructional materials will be available for review at:
Pimmit Hills Center, Room 207, 751 Lisle Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22043
Materials may be reviewed at Pimmit Hills Center Monday-Thursday from 9:00 am-9:00 pm. Visitors should enter through door #4 and check in at the main office or with the building coordinator on duty.
