Veterans Day

We will be honoring our Veterans on Friday, November 10.  We invite all family members who are veterans to join us for a special breakfast with their child on Friday at 8:30 am. Following the breakfast, Veterans are welcome to attend our school-wide Veterans Day assembly which will begin around 9:30 am.

Kindly RSVP using this link by Friday, November 3, if you plan to attend. We also encourage you to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher if you would like to speak to the class about Veterans Day.

Thank you for your service!

travel

Student Attendance & Family Travel:

We are nearing the season for family travel for the holidays. FCPS has a policy in place for how schools are to document attendance in order to be in compliance with Virginia state law.

Excused Tardies/Absences

Unexcused Tardies/Absences

Illness of the student

Death in the family

Doctor or dental appointment

Religious observances

Family vacations

Child care situations

Missed school bus/overslept

Nonschool-related activities

Per the Student Rights and Responsibilities, students are fully responsible for completing any missed assignments. Teachers may assist the student and parent or guardian in identifying missed work, but are not obligated to provide make-up assignments for unexcused absences.

When children miss school for travel, it is difficult to duplicate the direct instruction of the classroom teacher and the interaction and participation of other students. Teachers are not able to provide school "work" for these absences; instead, we ask that the students read a variety of books and keep a journal about the events that happen while away from school. Those are language arts activities that allow the students to practice in daily living what they have learned in school.

Other areas of the curriculum, such as mathematics, are more difficult to practice when away from school. The math instruction in our county involves hands-on lessons to learn concepts with the guidance and supervision of a classroom teacher. Social studies and science instruction involves discussion and relating new concepts to information students already know. This is something that the teacher does routinely. When a child is out, he/she is missing these key areas of the elementary school curriculum.

halloween candy

Join our mission to end waste

Americans spent a record $36.9 billion on candy in 2021—more than 600 million pounds of that candy is purchased just for Halloween. We all love celebrating with something sweet! However, the vast majority of candy wrappers end up in landfills due to an inability by most curbside recycling programs to recycle them.

Our 6th grade Garden Club and Recycling Club are partnering with Trash or Treasure™ to keep Halloween candy trash out of the landfills. They will have a recycling box in the lobby the week of Halloween.  So bring your candy wrappers and place them in our recycling box starting October 30.

Federal Impact Aid Survey: Now Online

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. To make it easier, the form is now available online in SIS ParentVUE

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

The enrolling parent will need to be logged into SIS ParentVUE and click “Online Packets” in the top right corner. Then, select “Federal Impact Aid Survey.” Get more information.
