A big thank you to Reston Farm Garden Market's owner and parent of Lillian N, 3rd grade student in Ms. Hosty's class, for the awesome pumpkin donation! We are so thankful for your generous donation!
The end of the 1st quarter of school is Friday, November 3rd. Students will dismiss from school two hours early. Dismissal will begin at 1:30 PM. If your Mustang is going home from school a different way than they usually do, please communicate this change to your student as well as their classroom teacher.
School will be closed for students on both Monday, November 6th and Tuesday, November 7th so that staff can facilitate parent-teacher conferences as well as prepare for the start of the 2nd quarter of school.
We will welcome our Mustangs back for the start of the 2nd quarter of school on Wednesday, November 8th.
Fairfax County Public Schools will adopt new Elementary School Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources for the 2024-2025 school year. A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers met in August to review the state-approved Cycle I materials. The committee will re-convene in January to review the state-approved Cycle II instructional materials under consideration. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new resources. Please share the information included in this communication with school staff and community by November 13, 2023.
Elementary English Language Arts basal instructional resources may be accessed in person and online from November 15, 2023, until noon on December 15, 2023. Digital materials for public review and comment will be available on the Elementary Language Arts Basal Resource Review website. Those reviewing instructional materials may complete an electronic comment sheet that will be available on the website during the review period.
Hard copies of instructional materials will be available for review at:
Pimmit Hills Center, Room 207 7510 Lisle Avenue Falls Church, VA 22043
Materials may be reviewed at Pimmit Hills Center Monday - Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Visitors should enter through door #4 and check in at the main office or with the building coordinator on duty.
All community feedback will be shared with the review committee and with School Board members before the vote at the School Board regular meeting.
We are excited to share that McNair ES & McNair Upper ES are bringing back our Storybook Character Parade! Please join us on Tuesday, October 31st at 9:15 AM to celebrate our staff and student’s favorite storybook characters.
Participation in this event is optional for students. If your Mustang chooses to participate, please ensure that the character they choose to dress up as is an actual age-appropriate storybook character and not just a movie character. School appropriate props that compliment a costume are welcome for this event. Masks and props that look like weapons should not be worn or brought on school property. We strongly encourage students to be creative and design their own storybook costume by looking for things already in their home or hanging in their closet.
Because many families love to see the creative costumes that reflect storybook characters our staff and students love, we will parade outside on our field area located on the backside of both of our school buildings.
For families who would like to join us, please go to the main entrance (door #1) of your child’s school. You will be given a visitor’s badge by a member of our office staff. We ask that you wear your visitor’s badge at all times while on school property. After obtaining your visitor’s badge, please walk to the back of our school buildings and stand outside of the fence that surrounds our field area. Please do not stand on the field as this space is where our Mustangs and staff will parade. If it is raining on the morning of this event, sadly, we will not parade outside. The parade will take place inside each building's gymnasiums. (The two schools would host their own parade in their building as opposed to joining together.) Please see the map below for specific parade locations.

As the weather turns colder and we have more families choosing to drive their children to school, please remember to model safe driving for your children. Our first priority is helping all of our children arrive at school safely. For many, that starts with their walk to school in the morning. We have noticed an increased amount of vehicles driving in an unsafe manner, putting our parents, children and staff at risk. All families choosing to drive to school must adhere to the following:
-
Drivers, follow all traffic laws and drive slowly when approaching intersections and crosswalks. Please no U-Turns in the middle of Fox Mill Road.
-
Do NOT stop on Fox Mill Road to let your children out. You block traffic and can easily get rear ended. All drivers must either parallel park within the lines on Fox Mill Road or use the Kiss and Ride loop.
-
Leave earlier, even 5 minutes will help. More cars means it will take more time to get everyone through Kiss and Ride.
-
All children must wear seatbelts whenever they are riding in a car. We see many children in Kiss and Ride not wearing seatbelts. This is an offense that could get you a ticket and puts your children at serious risk.
Our children are our first priority. Help us keep everyone safe by leaving extra time, driving slowly and practicing patience. Our teachers and crossing guards will direct traffic to the best of their ability, and they rely on partnership with drivers to keep everyone safe.
FCPS uses the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students and to support our request for Impact Aid resources, which become part of FCPS' general operating budget. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $3,000,000 in Impact Aid funds.
McNair Upper Elementary School will be participating in this annual survey. Families are encouraged to complete the survey through ParentVue beginning October 16 through October 31, 2023. Information on parent access to the online survey is available at https://www.fcps.edu/node/49068.
