From the Principal's Den
The Fall Fest occurred last Friday – what a great evening of fun with all our families! Kudos to the PTA and all volunteers and families for making the evenings such a good time for our school community. We are also enjoying a wonderful book fair currently in our library – many thanks to Ellen Wise, our librarian, and all volunteers for making that a special opportunity for our students. I would also like to acknowledge the PTA general membership meeting held last week and the partnership we are starting with Eagle Haven, an educational non-profit organization dedicated to accessing nature. To that end, I hope you will get out there and enjoy the crisper autumnal air and beautiful colors which continue to emerge all around us.
Over the past couple editions of our newsletter, I have been highlighting some of our reading and math goals. As we continue to focus on important topics to our school’s plan, I would like to focus in this edition on an area of great importance – school attendance.
Research consistently shows that regular school attendance is a cornerstone of student success. Attending school every day not only supports academic achievement but also fosters the development of crucial social and emotional skills. These skills, such as active listening, paying attention, problem-solving, and self-regulation are instrumental in a student's growth and overall learning experience.
At Fort Hunt Elementary School, we are dedicated to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally. To that end, we've set an ambitious goal for the 2023-24 school year. We aim to reduce our absenteeism rate to below 15%, as evidenced by data from the 2022-23 school year.
To achieve this goal, administration and the FHES attendance team, have devised a comprehensive plan, which consists of three main strategies:
- Creating a culture of engagement and belonging for students and families to promote and maintain a positive school climate.
- Strengthening messaging and ensuring outreach to parents, staff, students and the community regarding attendance.
- Providing intervention and support for students with attendance concerns.
As parents and guardians, your support is invaluable in helping us achieve our attendance improvement goals. Here are some tips to ensure your child is in school every day:

Establish a daily routine: A consistent schedule helps children understand the importance of attending school regularly.

Communicate with teachers: Stay in touch with your child's teachers to address any issues that may affect attendance.

Encourage a positive attitude: Help your child view school as an exciting place for learning and social interaction.

Be proactive: If your child is experiencing attendance challenges, please work with our attendance team to find solutions.
We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment where every student can thrive. Your partnership with us in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education. Together, we can make a significant impact on their future success.

El Festival de Otoño tuvo lugar el viernes pasado: ¡qué gran noche de diversión con todas nuestras familias! Felicitaciones al PTA y a todos los voluntarios y familias por hacer que las noches sean un momento tan bueno para nuestra comunidad escolar. También estamos disfrutando de una maravillosa feria del libro actualmente en nuestra biblioteca; muchas gracias a Ellen Wise, nuestra bibliotecaria y a todos los voluntarios por hacer de esta una oportunidad especial para nuestros estudiantes. También me gustaría reconocer la reunión general de miembros del PTA celebrada la semana pasada y la asociación que estamos iniciando con Eagle Haven, una organización educativa sin fines de lucro dedicada al acceso a la naturaleza. Con ese fin, espero que salgan y disfruten del aire otoñal más fresco y de los hermosos colores que continúan surgiendo a nuestro alrededor.
Durante las últimas dos ediciones de nuestro boletín, he destacado algunas de nuestras metas de lectura y matemáticas. Mientras continuamos enfocándonos en temas importantes para el plan de nuestra escuela, me gustaría centrarme en esta edición en un área de gran importancia: la asistencia escolar.
Las investigaciones muestran consistentemente que la asistencia regular a la escuela es la piedra angular del éxito de los estudiantes. Asistir a la escuela todos los días no sólo apoya el rendimiento académico, sino que también fomenta el desarrollo de habilidades sociales y emocionales cruciales. Estas habilidades, como escuchar activamente, prestar atención, resolver problemas y autorregulación, son fundamentales para el crecimiento y la experiencia de aprendizaje general de un estudiante.
En la Escuela Primaria Fort Hunt, estamos dedicados a garantizar que cada estudiante tenga la oportunidad de prosperar académica y personalmente. Con ese fin, nos hemos fijado una meta ambiciosa para el año escolar 2023-24. Nuestro objetivo es reducir nuestra tasa de ausentismo por debajo del 15 %, como lo demuestran los datos del año escolar 2022-23.

Impact Aid Survey Info
Filling out the Federal Impact Aid Survey helps Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) receive federal funds. This year parents have the option to fill out the survey online! Be a Superhero and help our schools! Starting today, October 16th, FCPS parents will have the option to fill out the survey online through their ParentVUE account. If you would like a paper form, they will be sent home on November 1st.

6th Grade "Spirit Animals"
Sixth grade students in Mr. Green's art classes created a drawing on tooling foil that depicted their “spirit animal,” or animal they considered a representation of their personality. They were also encouraged to include a creative background, such as the animal’s habitat or an abstract design. Students first drew a picture of their idea, then placed the drawing on top of tooling foil wrapped around cardboard. They traced their drawing with a pen by pressing it into the tooling foil. Once they completed this step, they used Sharpies to make the foil colorful.
"Espíritu Animal" de Sexto Grado
Los estudiantes de sexto grado en las clases del Sr. Green crearon un dibujo en papel de aluminio que representaba su “espíritu animal”, o animal que consideraban una representación de su personalidad. También se les animó a incluir un fondo creativo, como el hábitat del animal o un diseño abstracto. Los estudiantes primero hicieron un dibujo de su idea y luego colocaron el dibujo encima de papel de aluminio envuelto alrededor de cartón. Trazaron su dibujo con un bolígrafo presionándolo contra la lámina de aluminio. Una vez que completaron este paso, usaron Sharpies para darle color al papel de aluminio.

Veteran's Day Volunteers Needed
Fort Hunt Elementary will recognize Veterans Day on Friday, 10 November. We are currently in search of military-connected (Active Duty, Reserves, Guard, Veterans, etc.) volunteers to briefly speak to students and answer questions about your service. Ideas for discussion include why you serve/served, favorite parts of your job, etc. Please contact our Family Liaison, Christina Schauss (caschauss@fcps.edu), if you would like to volunteer to share your experience with our Fort Hunt Foxes. PTA Fall Fest
What an absolutely incredible Fall Fest we had this past Friday!! A HUGE thank you to everyone who came and supported us as we shifted everything inside due to the weather. From the creative trunks, to the delicious chili, fun cakes and yummy food trucks, every aspect of Fall Fest turned out better than we could have ever imagined and we are so grateful to our school community for helping make this event so memorable for the kids. We could not have done this without the help of our talented committee chairs, Amy Hawthorne, Allison Einhorn, Elisa Baber and Karen Guerra, as well as the support from our faculty, staff, sixth graders, many parent volunteers and custodians. Thank you for your time helping to plan, coordinate and execute every aspect of the event to make sure nothing was forgotten. We'd also like to thank our fleet of trunks consisting of families, local businesses and school sponsors for braving the rain and trusting that we had you covered, literally. (Thanks to those who donated tents!!) We’re already dreaming of next October. Until then, we’ll see you at Fox Trot!

Festival de Otoño del PTA
¡Qué increíble estuvo el Festival de Otoño el viernes pasado! Un ENORME agradecimiento a todos los que vinieron y nos apoyaron mientras cambiábamos todo adentro debido al clima. Desde los baúles creativos hasta el delicioso chile, los divertidos pasteles y los deliciosos camiones de comida, todos los aspectos del Festival de Otoño resultaron mejor de lo esperábamos. Estamos muy agradecidos con nuestra comunidad escolar y por ayudar a que este evento haya sido tan memorable para los niños. No hubiéramos podido haber hecho esto sin la ayuda de nuestros talentosos presidentes de comité, Amy Hawthorne, Allison Einhorn, Elisa Baber y Karen Guerra, así como el apoyo de nuestra facultad, personal, estudiantes de sexto grado, muchos padres voluntarios y conserjes. Gracias por su tiempo ayudando a planificar, coordinar y ejecutar todos los aspectos del evento para asegurarse de que no faltara nada. Early Release - End of 1st Quarter
Friday, November 3rd is the end of the 1st quarter and will be a two hour early release day at 1:40p. If your student does not ride the bus, please make sure they are picked up on time.
