Bullying Awareness Month
October is National Bullying Awareness Month. Here at Woodburn, students are working hard to become Upstanders and focus on practicing empathy, kindness, and standing up for what’s right! Some things that Woodburn is doing to recognize this important topic include:
- School Wide Spirit Week: Be an Upstander October 23rd-27th
- The “ Upstander Acts” box will be introduced to students and used throughout the year to recognize Woodburn Upstanders!
- Guest appearance from Mrs. Dauberman on the news show to remind students of SR&R expectations
- School Counseling Lessons will focus on Bullying Prevention and being an Upstander all month long!
Storybook Character Day on Oct. 27
We are excited to celebrate Storybook Character Day on Friday, October 27 and invite all students to dress up and participate. Please no masks or toy weapons.
Lunch Changes
Starting Monday, the salad bar will be moving into the serving line. The district is beginning to offer more freshly cooked options each month. Moving the salad bar will be part of this change.
PTA Election Day Bake Sale on Tuesday, November 7th
Calling all bakers and volunteers! The annual Woodburn Elementary Election Day Bake Sale is happening Tuesday, Nov 7th. Please sign up to bring homemade or store-bought baked goods! We are also seeking a couple volunteers to help with sales. It's a super fun and festive day and a great way to see friends and neighbors heading to the polls. The bake sale will be held in the parking lot of the school from 8am-1pm. There will also be Anita's breakfast tacos and some special student-made crafts for sale! Please sign up to help out here.
Hearing and Vision Screenings for Kindergarten and 3rd Grade
Hearing and vision screenings are required for all students in kindergarten and 3rd grade. Kindergarteners will be screened on Monday, October 30 and 3rd graders will be screened on Monday, November 20.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid
The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.
The surveys will be available online this year. Please log into ParentVue from October 16 to October 30. Once logged in, please select the “Online Packets” tab at the top, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” from the drop down menu.
Any surveys not completed by October 31 will be sent home in Thursday Folders on November . Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their teacher no later than Thursday, November 16th.
For questions regarding the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid, please call 703-329-7750 or email ImpactAid@fcps.edu or visit https://www.fcps.edu/impact. Additional information about Impact Aid programs and grants is available on the U.S. Department of Education's website at DoED Impact Aid Program.

FCPS Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to specify the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.
Watch this video to learn more about the definitions of the security terms: lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.
If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
