Stronger together
Dear Clearview Families,
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for International Night last night. It was incredible to learn about so many of the diverse cultures represented in the Clearview community. Kudos to those who shared their cultures and to those who performed! Thank you to members of the Family Engagement Committee for planning such a wonderful event celebrating diversity. See additional pictures on our Facebook page.
Many students received prizes today from the Clearview PTA Camp Read-A-Lot fundraiser. For more information, be sure to visit the PTA’s section of the newsletter at the bottom of this publication.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or compliments you may have. If you have seen a Clearview staff member going above and beyond, fill out an FCPS Cares here.
Have a GREAT weekend!

🌒 Upcoming Solar Eclipses and How to View Them Safely
There will be an annular eclipse tomorrow, October 14. Virginia is not in the direct path of the moon’s shadow, so we will only be able to see a partial eclipse in this region. FCPS has gathered resources for students and families to learn more about the eclipse, and how to view it safely.
Save the date for a more dramatic event! On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total eclipse will be viewable from North America.
Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun.
🟠Unity Day-Wear Orange🟠
Tuesday, October 17 is Unity Day* at Clearview! Students can join our counselors, teachers, and staff in celebrating Unity Day by wearing orange. Wear any orange item to show that Clearview is united in kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Unity Day was started by the National Bullying Prevention Center as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month and continues to grow every year as a tangible representation of the universal message that our society wants to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying. The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.
*National Unity Day is on 10/18, which is also Clearview’s picture day. We will be observing Unity Day on 10/17 in order to allow students to wear and share orange on Tuesday and then see their individual style for their pictures on Wednesday.
📚 Lexia Parent Night: Learn About Literacy Support
FCPS funds Lexia for all elementary schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with the data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend an information night to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom. Parents/caregivers will also get tips for supporting their students at home.
Information nights will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:
-
Wednesday, October 18, at Thoreau Middle School (Cafeteria).
-
Thursday, October 19, at Edison High School (Auditorium).
Register to attend or submit a question in advance.
Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Disability History and Awareness Month
In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community. Any time is a great time to talk with children about how all of us have unique strengths and challenges.
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”
For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student

A Veteran to Honor
Are you, a family member or a friend a Veteran? Saturday, November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and, in preparation, we would like to request that you share a picture of a family member or friend that has served in the U.S. Military via email with Letty Bobby or bring/send in a picture with your child. Tell us their full name, your relation to them, in which branch of the military they served, and rank and we will honor them. Please note: Pictures will not be returned.

Communication and our children's digital lives
Engaging in open and honest conversations with your children about their technology use is crucial in today's digital age, as it allows you to understand their online activities, interests, and potential risks they may encounter. By actively participating in your child's digital life, you can help them navigate the internet safely, teach them about responsible online behavior, and foster a healthy balance between screen time and other important activities. Communication builds trust, and when your children know they can talk to you about their online experiences without fear of judgment, they are more likely to seek your guidance when faced with online challenges or dangers. Being a supportive and involved parent in the digital world not only helps protect your child from online threats but also strengthens your relationship and promotes their overall well-being in today's tech-driven society. Remember, your active engagement in their digital journey is a powerful tool in shaping their online habits and ensuring their safety.
🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity
FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
