Two new STEM-focused after-school opportunities are starting in the next few weeks... see below for details.
Project WILD/Conservation Classroom:
Mondays, B-session, Room 701
Ms. Carole Deason
Students will explore and experience hands on activities related to wildlife and conservation using materials from the National Fish and Wildlife Office and the National Zoo/Smithsonian Institute Conservation Classroom. Project WILD is on the signup form today, and will start next week on Monday!

Science Investigators:
1st Monday of the Month, A-session, Room 701
Ms. Carole Deason
Each meeting, we explore a new area of science via multimedia and hands-on experiences. Read a paper, explore a professional scientific association, explore science applied in Virginia and the world. Maybe you’ll decide you want to be a scientist and what type of science you want to explore i.e., botany, physics, dendrology, geology. Students are center stage here following the science of interest to them or learning about new areas they have not yet discovered.

On Friday, October 27, at 5:00pm, LJMS will host a one-day co-ed basketball tournament with teams from Holmes MS, Glasgow MS, Poe MS and Kilmer MS. Students athletes have been working with Coach Carter and Coach Bailey during after-school on Mondays and Wednesdays to prepare for this competition. Parents and siblings of players are invited to attend WITH their students... this is not a "drop-off" event for students not participating, as we will have students and parents from 5 different schools on site all at once.

All students MUST sign up ahead of time
The After-School Signup form is posted each Friday for the next week. (this morning, I posted the signup form for October 16-20) Students who plan to stay after school must sign up ahead of time using the "Weekly After-School Signup Form" found in Schoology, at the top of the "All-School Course". There's a handy button right at the top of the page. Students have until the end of D lunch (12:45) each day to sign up for that day's activities.

ALL students MUST enter their attendance
At dismissal, students who are staying after school are to remain in their last period classroom until all buses have departed. Then we make an announcement inviting after-school students to the cafeteria for a free snack. When they arrive, we first ask them to take out their laptops and log their after-school attendance using the OTHER after-school button...
These procedures exist for the safety of your students! We need to know who plans to come each day, so we can make sure we have enough staff, and enough snacks. We also need to know who is in the building, and where they are, so if a parent calls looking for their child, we can quickly locate them. We are averaging around 250-275 students after school on our busiest days (Wednesday and Thursday), so it is imperative that all students enter attendance to help us keep track of everyone!
Pickup time is 4:45pm
All B-session activities end at 4:40pm, and we begin to gather students in the cafeteria to load them onto late buses at 4:45pm. About half of the buses are here by 4:45, and some roll in a bit later, but our goal is to have them all leaving here by 5:00pm.
Students getting picked up by a parent should be picked up by 4:45pm, otherwise we may ask them to get on a bus! Our staff has to remain on site until all students are picked up, so we appreciate your promptness!
