In this Friday Message you will find:
Floris Families,
It was a busy week with Election Day, adjusting to the time change, and our fabulous 2nd grade Veterans Day performance. We want to say again how grateful we are for all veterans. Your service is appreciated! It was wonderful to see the red, white, and blue and the Hero Wall in honor of many amazing veterans. Kudos also go out to our music teachers, Steven Field and Danelle McLellan, for their hard work in preparing our 2nd graders for the performance.
There are several meetings next week:
- Wednesday:
- Monthly Floris PTA Meeting, 6:30pm, café
- FLE materials preview, 5:45-6:15pm, café. There is no presentation about the FLE lessons. It is just another time to preview the materials if you aren't able to access them in your Schoology account. Parents ONLY- no children at this preview
- Thursday: AAP Full-time Referral Information Session with Ms. Albanese and Ms. Pickett, 8:45am, library - Enter via Door 1 and sign in with government issued photo ID. *This is for parents who are planning to do a referral for students currently in grades 2-6.*
We then wrap up the week with the PTA Spirit Ball at 6:30pm in the café and gym.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Holly Walker, Principal, hjwalker@fcps.edu
Rob Gibbs, Assistant Principal, ragibbs@fcps.edu

Veterans Day
Veterans Day provides a great reason to pause, reflect, and recognize the extraordinary sacrifices our Veterans and their families have made on our behalf, and we thank them for their service. Learn more about the history of Veterans Day at va.gov.
Diwali
Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. To everyone celebrating, we wish you a fun and festive Diwali!
American Education Week
For American Education Week we celebrate ALL who work in our Floris community: our bus drivers, cafeteria workers, counselors, support staff, teachers, leadership and more! Learn more from the National Education Association.

“One Floris Day”
Coming November 17th
At Floris, we will celebrate ONE FLORIS DAY on Friday, November 17. In alignment with the spirit week, please have your students wear their Floris spirit wear and/or our school colors of blue and white to help them remember that at Floris, we are a community of ONE. We stand up for each other, we help each other, we care for each other. #EveryEagleEveryDay.
Full-Time Advanced Academics Referral Process (students in grades 2-6)
For parents interested in referring their child for full-time AAP services, the following documents need to be submitted to Amy Albanese abalbanese@fcps.edu (Grades 2, 4, 6) or Katie Pickett kmpickett@fcps.edu (Grades 3, 5) - on or before Dec. 15, 2023. Late submissions cannot be accepted.
If you have questions about the screening process for full-time services, we will be offering an information session for parents on Thursday, November 16 @ 8:45AM in the school library. No RSVP needed. Please be sure to enter at Door 1, bring your government issued photo ID and sign in with the front office upon your arrival. You will be directed to the library with your visitor badge.
Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Amy Albanese abalbanese@fcps.edu or Katie Pickett kmpickett@fcps.edu
Referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific AAP or part-time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for full-time AAP next fall.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
