Second Step

Hello Bush Hill Parents and Families!

We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.  We have begun Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:

Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.

Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.

Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:

S: Say the problem

T: Think of solutions

E: Explore the outcomes

P: Pick a solution

You’ll receive communications from your child’s teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community!

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.

The surveys will be available online this year. Please log into ParentVue from October 16 - 30, 2023. Once logged in, please select the “Online Packets” tab at the top, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” from the drop down menu.

Any surveys not completed by October 31 will be sent home in Tuesday folders.  Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their teacher no later than Thursday, November 16th.

For questions regarding the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid, please call 703-329-7750 or email ImpactAid@fcps.edu or visit https://www.fcps.edu/impact.  Additional information about Impact Aid programs and grants is available on the U.S. Department of Education's website at DoED Impact Aid Programs.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Odyssey of the Mind https://www.odysseyofthemind.com/ is a creative thinking/problem solving competition.  Students use their creativity to become problem solvers and, most importantly, all of the solutions are created by the students themselves!  Teams of 5 to 7 students are formed and solve a spontaneous problem and a long-term problem, which typically involves an 8-minute skit.  Odyssey of the Mind emphasizes teamwork, creativity, and having lots of fun.

Fill out the form here if interested in Odyssey of the Mind!

This Enrichment effort will require assistance from parents/coaches.  Please email ptabushhillelementary@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering.

FALL FESTIVAL

The PTA needs your help making this year's Fall Festival a success! The tentative date is Saturday November 11. If you have ideas, are willing to volunteer, or want to join the planning committee, please email ptabushhillelementary@gmail.com

Lexia Parent Night

Learn About Literacy Support

FCPS funds Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with the data to identify students who need further support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend an information night to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom. Parents/caregivers will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Information nights will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:

  • Wednesday, October 18, at Thoreau Middle School (Cafeteria).
  • Thursday, October 19, at Edison High School (Auditorium).

Register to attend or submit a question in advance

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.
