Tutors working during the school day must be able to work at least 12 hours a week with a maximum of 29 hours a week, for 3-5 days per week. Tutors will collaborate with school-based and central office staff to provide student academic support aligned to standards-based classroom instruction. Responsibilities will include preparing and teaching lessons that range between 30 minutes to 45 minutes in length for groups of approximately four students at a time. Tutors will also be responsible for assessing student learning, managing student performance data, and communicating with school staff and families regarding student progress

Qualifications

Tutor candidates are required to meet at least one of the following:

  1. are currently enrolled at an accredited college/university OR
  2. have completed at least an associate degree OR
  3. have professional experience working in a field related to language arts, mathematics, or science OR
  4. are a current or former FCPS teacher, noting current teachers will not tutor during their existing contract hours

Solar Eclipse

Resources for families to learn more about the upcoming solar eclipses (October 14, 2023 and April 8, 2024) have been compiled, including safe viewing practices, have been made available on a dedicated FCPS website link. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

FCDOT Project Survey

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has developed a proposed list of projects that will be narrowed down further with input from the community to receive a portion of $100 million funding allocated by the Board of Supervisors (BOS). In an effort to fund safer pedestrian and bicycle facilities, the Board approved $100 million in new funding for one-time investments in pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure through FY 2027. To date, $30.2 million of the dedicated $100 million has been allocated for active transportation improvements and maintenance.

FCDOT has a survey  to share your input on potential projects:  Active Transportation Project Prioritization for Funding | Transportation (fairfaxcounty.gov) The survey will run through October 16th.  Please choose the Dranesville District section in the survey to see the projects for the area.

Safe Kiss and Ride Procedures

Cooper’s Kiss and Ride is designed to help keep students safe, as well as maintain traffic flow during arrival/dismissal times. Kiss and Ride drop-off and pick-up occurs in the back parking lot.

It is important to understand, follow, and adhere to the following procedures:

  • Kiss and Ride drop-off is located at the back of the school beginning at 7:00AM
  • Dead Run Drive is closed during arrival and departures.
  • Cars will be permitted at the front of the school for drop-offs, after the buses have cleared the loop.
    • If your student is arriving after 7:30, use Door 1.
  • We all are responsible to guarantee the safety of all students.  Therefore, students should never be dropped off at the following locations:
    • Dead Run
    • Balls Hill Rd
    • Georgetown Pike cross streets
    • Parking lot spots as well as handicap spots
    • Intersections that lead into the school
    • Masonic Temple next door

Leis for Lahaina Fundraiser

SCA Fundraiser:  Leis for Lahaina

The SCA (Student Council Association) is hosting their first fundraiser of the year: Leis for Lahaina. All proceeds are going to those affected by the recent wildfire in Maui. Students can purchase a lei for $1 (exact change/cash needed) starting Tuesday, September 26th, until Tuesday, October 31st. All students who purchase a lei are then encouraged to wear them on Friday, November 2nd, to show support for the cause! Students can purchase leis during their lunch block from Mr. Klena, or see Mrs. McNulty (room 2402) or Mrs. Harris (room 1407). Mahalo for your support!

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10

Cooper will be offering the AMC 10A this year on Wednesday, November 8th, after school at 2:30 PM. The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice examination in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills. This test is for students in 10th grade and below and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade.

The AMC 8, which we will be hosting in January, is targeted for middle school students in grade 8 and below. The AMC 10 is NOT required for the AMC 8, and historically, the majority of our Cooper students interested in the AMC competitions take only the AMC 8. Details will follow in the coming weeks on how to register for the AMC 8.

If your student is interested in taking the AMC 10A, please sign up using this Google Form (https://forms.gle/2Fv8ztto51B1XdWr7). There will be a $5.00 administrative fee to take the test. The fee can be paid through MySchool Bucks. The deadline to register and pay the fee for AMC 10 is October 13th. As a reminder, the AMC 8 will be offered in January for those who are interested.

Please contact Lisa Walsh and lswalsh1@fcps.edu with any questions.

SEL Screener

October 17th, Cooper Middle School will administer the SEL Screener during block 4. Please review the E-notify that was sent to you on 09/06 for details.
