Floris Families,

There was some fabulous spirit around the school this week. The weather cooperated for another amazing annual Harvest Parade this morning. There were so many smiles and cheers from students, staff, and parents.

Many thanks to our librarian, Tiffany Dowling, for another fantastic Fall Book Fair! Her planning and hard work are appreciated. Thanks also go out to the volunteers who have supported Ms. Dowling throughout the Book Fair and in our library on a regular basis.

November is Family Engagement Month. National Family Engagement Month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. More than 35 years of research shows that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in the education of their child. Strong parental and family support is vital to the well-being and success of students. FCPS has many resources for families designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth. Please see below some ideas of questions to ask your child about school and a calendar created by the FCPS Family and School Partnerships Office.

Dia de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Next Wednesday, November 1, and Thursday, November 2, are observance days in the FCPS calendar this year. Floris hopes everyone who celebrates finds peace and happiness.

Next Friday, November 3, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for all FCPS students. Floris dismissal is at 2:00pm next Friday, November 3.

Have a fabulous weekend!

4th Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Theme: “Our Oceans & Their Incredible Creatures”

Sponsored by Floris Green Team

To celebrate the fall season, our Green Team invites all students to participate in a pumpkin decorating contest focused on the theme, “Our Oceans & Their Incredible Creatures”.   Show us your creative talents while thinking about our waterways.  Pumpkin artists are encouraged to incorporate natural materials (e.g. acorns, leaves, flowers, sticks…) and/or non-toxic Earth-friendly paints.  Photos of your creation may be submitted to Sarah de Kramer at shdekramer@fcps.edu by Friday, Nov. 3rd. (No need to send the pumpkin to school!) Awards will be given under two categories:  Most Creative Use of Natural Materials, and Best Representation of the Theme.  See photos of some prior awardees below.
