October 9: Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Staff Development Day)
Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native peoples, past and present. This year, Monday, October 9, is a student holiday and staff development day.

October 9: Hangul Proclamation Day
The Korean Alphabet Day, known as Hangeul Day in South Korea, and Chosŏn'gŭl Day in North Korea, is a national Korean commemorative day marking the invention and proclamation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, by the 15th-century Korean King Sejong the Great.

Smile! Bull Run Bulls Picture Day October 12
Bull Run Elementary invites families to pre-order pictures for our upcoming Picture Day on Thursday, October 12. We will partner with Legacy Studios again this year to capture this special day for our students!

Save the Date - Introduction to AAP and Continuum of Services Parent Information Meeting (grades K-6)

Bull Run Elementary invites all families to join Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Mrs. Will, at our Fall Introduction to AAP and Continuum of Services Parent Information Meeting (grades K-6). Families will learn about the continuum of Advanced Academic Programs available within FCPS and at Bull Run Elementary specifically.
We will gather together on Tuesday, October 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the Bull Run Elementary library. See you there!

Math and Literacy in Your World!
We are planning a new spotlighting on our morning news show that highlights some ways you, as a family, integrate math and literacy into your daily lives.
Some examples for math:
- Shopping trips
- Board Games
- Dividing items equally for different purposes
- Shape hunts in your neighborhood
- Building projects
- Planning a trip
- Counting steps or calculating and comparing step count over time
Some examples for literacy:
- Turning captions on television shows
- Reading together as a family
- Reading street signs around town
- Practice story telling
- Printing out lyrics of favorite songs
- Playing board games
- Writing letters to family and community members
- Sharing a review of a loved book
- Researching topics of interest
Please send in pictures with explanations or video clips of your family engaging in these activities so we can highlight them on the morning news show! TJHSST Invitational Science Fair 2024
TJ Investigative Science Outreach, a student-led organization at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, will be hosting the 11th annual science fair on March 16, 2024 and invites 5th-8th grade students to participate. Admission to the science fair is completely free.
Participants will complete a research project of their choice and present at the fair in-person on March 16, 2024. Students will receive help preparing for this fair through multiple sessions at TJHSST to teach them important skills in STEM like brainstorming, collecting data, presenting, writing an experiment summary, using statistics, creating an experimental diagram, etc.

Bull Run Elementary Spirit Days every Friday - Wear Blue and White or Gray!
Bull Run Elementary encourages every students to wear our school colors, blue & white, every Friday! This is a simple way we can show our community spirit and love for all things BRES! Spirit wear is encouraged and welcome or wear your blue and white. Make a plan with friends and see how many of you can participate! Staff often wear their blue and white or Spirit Wear on Fridays!

📖 Students Reading by the Third Grade
During the Academic Matters and strategic plan update segments of Thursday’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented on the divisionwide target to have students reading by third grade.
FCPS has continued to improve its approach to reading over the last several years through our Equitable Access to Literacy (EAL) plan. Reading by third grade is also one of the measures of Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence in our 2023-30 strategic plan.
By focusing on foundational skills for our young readers and literacy intervention for upper grades, FCPS has made significant progress towards narrowing the achievement gaps in this critical skill. Visit the Strategic Plan webpage for more information.

💲Substitutes to Receive High-Volume Pay on High-Volume Days
The School Board has approved a list of 18 days for substitutes to receive high-volume pay. All teacher substitutes will receive their hourly pay plus an additional $80 for each high-volume day they work. See the list of high-volume days and more information.
A bonus program for substitutes who accept more than the 10 required days has also been approved. Substitutes working 50 days within a school year, will earn a $200 bonus. Substitutes working 100 days within a school year, will earn a $300 bonus. Substitutes working 150 days within a school year, will earn a $400 bonus. Get more information on this sub bonus program.

FCPS is always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers. Weekly virtual substitute teacher information sessions are held each Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. Register for an upcoming session on Wednesday, September 27, and Wednesday, October 4.

How to Access Free Resources from Tutor.com
All FCPS students continue to have unlimited access to live, 24/7, one-on-one online tutoring services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Student participation is optional and parents/caregivers can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. Get more information on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services webpage.
Students can access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following: Elementary - How It Works and Middle & High - How It Works. Questions not answered in the posted resources may be sent to onlinetutoring@fcps.edu.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity
FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
