Principal's Message

10-12

Hello Shrevewood Families,

As we approach the end of the 1st quarter in the next few weeks, we want to remind you about our upcoming parent-teacher conferences. These conferences provide a valuable opportunity for our teachers to discuss your child's progress, share insights, and collaborate with you to ensure their continued success. Teachers will be reaching out, if they have not done so already, to schedule conferences starting on October 23rd. We believe that a strong parent-teacher partnership is vital in supporting your child's education. We look forward to your participation in the upcoming conferences and to working together to help your child achieve their full potential.

In our PTA meeting this week, we had the opportunity to share our School Improvement and Innovation goals which are focused around reading, math, and access and opportunity. We are in process of getting them posted to our school website and will share the specifics when we do so. As a school team, we will continue to reevaluate these goals and share our progress at the end of each quarter with our community.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

National Bullying Awareness Month

October is National Bullying Awareness Month. Our counselors are focusing their classroom lessons this month around bullying and the role of the bystander. If your child reports being bullied, here are the recommended steps to follow.

PORTRAIT of a GRADUATE Across SWES!

pogpol

Here you will see the selected Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes selected by each SWES grade level.  The grade levels also noted the skills they will intentionally integrate in preparation for Presentations of Learning (POL) at the end of the year.  The POL is a small group conversation that each student will participate in with their teacher.  In this conversation, the student will share their personal growth in one or more skills and reference the evidence they collected throughout the year to prove that growth.  They will also share why that growth matters!

Look for these attributes & skills visible inside classrooms and within the hallways of Shrevewood!  We hope you will also look for ways to connect some of your home conversations to these attributes and skills.

In the spring, we will have an evening school-wide event to Celebrate our Learning in these attributes and skills.  Stay tuned for those details later in the year.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Integrity. Integrity means you are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Integrity is vital to individual growth. It is correlated with a multitude of psychological well-being measures. Harmony in your feelings, thoughts, and actions makes you better able to personally grow and achieve goals. Authenticity and a lack of pretense make you more likable and trusted by others, meaning your relationships will benefit.

To practice and encourage the character strength of integrity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
